BLACKPINK K-Pop Comeback: YG Entertainment Rookie Girl Group To Increase Promotions For Return Including ‘M! Countdown’

When YG Entertainment rookie girl group Black Pink made their debut on Monday, August 8, they took the K-pop world by storm. They first broke the typical mold of a debuting K-pop act by releasing not one, but two debut songs: “Whistle” and “Boombayah.” Apparently, YG Entertainment knew what they were doing as both songs contributed to making Black Pink an instant success. Within their first week, their song “Whistle” achieved an All-Kill followed by a Perfect All-Kill, was played during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, and garnered about 30 million views between both music videos.

Though Black Pink had an amazing debut, the best for 2016 so far, many in the K-pop community, especially fans and press, wondered why promotions for Black Pink were short. They only lasted about four to six weeks depending on the promoted song. YG Entertainment never gave an answer on why the promotions were short, but they did recognize they were, as reports now show Black Pink will increase promotional activities for their K-pop comeback.

The reports of Black Pink increasing their promotional activities for their K-pop comeback later on in November came about after Yang Hyun Suk, the founder and chief executive officer of YG Entertainment, revealed the rookie K-pop girl group would be next. According to Korean news outlet Naver, through a translation by Soompi, a source at YG Entertainment revealed on Sunday, October 23, that Black Pink will be increasing their promotions after they release their first comeback song on Tuesday, November 1. This includes promotion stages. Not only that, it seems Black Pink will also be making appearances on variety shows such as Weekly Idol.

“Black Pink has received more love than we anticipated. Starting from the new track that’s revealed on November 1, Black Pink will be promoting on not only Inkigayo, but also Mnet’s M! Countdown as well. They are also planning on appearing on variety programs that are similar to MBC Every1’s Weekly Idol.”

From the statement provided by the YG Entertainment source, we do know that Black Pink is coming back with at least one song they wish to promote. To some extent, this is a smart move by YG Entertainment as promoting two songs is very difficult to do. It was an excellent gimmick to get K-pop fans excited for Black Pink, but two featured songs will run the gamut of the K-pop act being in competition with themselves. In a way, it happened with Black Pink as “Whistle” was initially the popular song but in the long run, it was overtaken by “Boombayah.”

It should also be noted that the YG Entertainment source said two things. The first is Black Pink will be promoting on M! Countdown. According to AllKpop, Black Pink did almost all of their promotions exclusively for Inkigayo. The reason why was never explained, but it is possible Black Pink would have been even more popular than they already are if they were competing on other music competition shows. Black Pink, however, did win on the September 8 episode of M! Countdown.

Next, Black Pink will be partaking in a variety show, most likely Weekly Idol. This is great news for K-pop fans who wanted to see Black Pink on a variety show, but it brings up the question on what happened to BLACKPINK TV? YG Entertainment promised fans a behind-the-scenes look on how Black Pink members are when they are not performing, kind of like a glimpse at the “real” Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé. It is now almost November and we still don’t have BLACKPINK TV. To be fair, the announcement was made by YG Entertainment and the entertainment company and agency is notorious for making announcements they don’t follow through with.

Black Pink will make their K-pop comeback on Tuesday, November 1, with the release of their new title track which is, at this moment, still unnamed. It is also on that day their second album, Square Two, will drop.
