Sheffield adds to Mets misery

Gary Sheffield is at it again. There are a lot of rumors flying from the New York Mets clubhouse these days and a lot of them seem to indicate that Sheffield has quit the team. Sheffield apparently was placed on waivers by the Nets and when a claim was made for him, they withdrew him. Then Mets GM Omar Minaya held a meeting with Sheffield explaining the situation. It was a this meeting were Sheffield may have asked Minaya for a new contract, and when he was denied asked ot be released by the team.

This would not be the first time the Sheffield has been released in 2009. earlier this spring Sheffield was released by the Detroit Tigers after having an injury prone 2008 campaign were Sheffield under performed constantly. In all reality Sheffield was done with baseball, but had one burning desire left to achieve.

Sheffield took a spot on the Mets for one reason, and one reason only. Sheffield was but a few home runs shy of the 500 career home run mark. that is a significant mark since it will carry an automatic election into baseball’s hall of fame. Without it, after a career of saying whatever he felt like saying, Sheffield knew he would not be elected to the hall by the baseball writers.

Now that he has his 500th hoe run he is looking for some semi dignified way to exit the stage of baseball, what better way than a big feud with a GM who is at risk of losing his own job.
