‘Bernie Or Bust’ Contingent Refusing To Get Rolled Over At Convention

Even in the face of acute condescension from pro-Hillary groups and the mainstream media, the “Bernie or Bust” contingent is refusing to back off in Philadelphia.

While the higher echelons of the Democratic Party, and Hillary Clinton in particular, were hoping that the Democratic National Convention would showcase a polar opposite to the chaotic — and ultimately self-destructive — Republican convention in Cleveland, Wikileaks made certain that was not the case. Nearly 20,000 emails, suggesting that the DNC had colluded with the Clinton campaign to derail Bernie Sanders’ chances of winning the nomination, were released by the organization on Friday, guaranteeing that the convention in Philadelphia was going to be anything but smooth.

Whatever chances the Democrats had of presenting a strong, united front dissipated in a jiffy with the release of the emails.

Thousands of members of the “Bernie or Bust” contingent turned out at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia to express their dissatisfaction at the electoral process that saw Hillary Clinton edge Bernie Sanders in the primaries. For these supporters, the hacked DNC emails offered a mere confirmation of what they had suspected all along — that the DNC had worked in tandem with the Clinton campaign, as well as the mainstream media, to sabotage the Vermont senator’s campaign.

Moreover, the emails provided ample proof that the DNC had rigged the primaries to help a candidate, who, perhaps, was anointed to be the eventual Democratic nominee even before the first ballot was cast. DNC, finding itself cornered, decided that someone had to take the fall.

As the Washington Post reported, it took pressure from the White House — and a call by President Barack Obama himself — to make DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz see the writing on the wall. She resigned swiftly, but was soon awarded with a honorary position in Clinton’s campaign. For the “Bernie or Bust” supporters, nothing could have been more disgusting. No matter how culpable one was in “rigging” the primaries, camaraderie with Clinton absolved oneself of all responsibilities to the people.

So although the message on day one of the convention was clear — get behind Hillary — it appears this time the DNC has failed to read the writing on the wall. The “Bernie or Bust” members — as the mainstream media will have you believe — are not “fanatics,” “idiots” or a “bunch of Utopian kids.” Most of them are members of the Democratic party who are so tired with the warmongering, oligarchical nature of Hillary Clinton’s political enterprise that they have decided not to buy into “lesser of the two evils” argument. They are made of millennials, true, but the “Bernie or Bust” contingent also boasts of longtime registered Democrats who would rather #Demexit than #VoteforHillary.

Allison Hall, 68, who is refusing to bow down to the relentless pressure surrounding her, is not going to be coerced into joining the Clinton bandwagon. For Hall, who lost a dear friend to the Vietnam war, it is Clinton’s affinity to wars that will never allow her to vote for her.

“We’re from Brooklyn — 126,000 [voters] purged [from voter rolls] in Brooklyn. We’re just appalled at the fraud. Where is the democracy? Where are our votes?

“My high school boyfriend was killed in Vietnam. They admitted, after two million Vietnamese killed, 55,000 of my generation came back in body bags, ‘Oh it was just a mistake.’

“She doesn’t ever find a war that she does not like. It’s just, it’s sickening. Any Democrat should have no trouble beating Trump, but she is the worst candidate possible because of her history.”

For others, it is her history of public corruption. For several other “Bernie or Bust” supporters, it is Clinton’s habit of lying through her teeth which concerns them enough not to rally behind her. After all, the question is about conscience.

“Bernie or Bust” supporters are aware of the dangers that a Trump presidency poses to the future of America, and indeed the world, and they are not going to vote for him. And while staying home might not be an option for the future of America, they will keep looking at the other options till it is time to choose.

Sarah Silverman, in her speech at the convention last night, called the pro-Bernie contingent “ridiculous” for booing Clinton faithfuls. Her smug expression and condescending tone should be enough to make any Clinton supporter understand why “Bernie or Bust” will never be “Hillary or Bust.”
