‘Me Before You’ Propped for Being The Best Romantic Movie Of The Year? Could Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin Star In A New Love Tandem?

Jojo Moyes’ film adaptation of Me Before You has been a hit to the fans. Though it has received mixed reviews, many still appreciate the film’s narrative and the lessons it leaves the viewers.

Me Before You‘s script was also written by Jojo Moyes. Though it has been criticized by Movie Pilot to have a different portrayal than the book, most movie adaptations are revised to fit into an hour and a half of screen time.

For Jojo Moyes, it is important to highlight the two protagonists in the movie, Lou Clark, played by Game of Thrones’ star Emilia Clarke, and Will Trayner, portrayed by Sam Claflin.

Me Before You revolves around an unambitious 26-year-old Lou who is the breadwinner of her working class family. After the coffee shop she worked for for 6 years closed down, Lou is set to find a new job that would fit her. Desperate to get any job as soon as possible, she took an interesting post to take care of a paraplegic who is a family member of one of the aristocrats in town—they actually own a castle.

Though the movie seems like a boring formula of “poor girl meets rich boy,” the depth of the characters has given this generic formula more meaning. Lou struggles to find her way to being close to the snotty Will Traynor. But, her persistence, weird outfits and bright outlook in life has eventually become irresistible to Will.

The two would discover the beauty of companionship along the way. In the movie, Emilia Clarke has also been criticized by the Sydney Morning Herald to be trying too hard. The publication noted that Clarke has been forcing her quirkiness just to stray too far away from her serious role as the Mother of Dragons in Game of Thrones.

On the other hand, I argue that Emilia Clarke has done a fantastic job in channeling who Lou Clark really is. At the same time, Emilia Clarke’s real personality, as you will see her in interviews, is quite the opposite of who she appears to be whenever she is playing Daenerys Targaryen. Just as Sam Claflin said in an interview, they are just “good actors.”

Moreover, Jojo Moyes has done a fantastic job in highlighting the development of the two love birds. It was not love at first sight. There might have been physical attraction, but it was not lust. Their love story has become even more endearing because of that innocence—they just want to make each other happy.

At the same time, the soundtracks of the movie have given much highlight to every moment in the film, according to Movie Pilot.

Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin have never been in a common project before. Though Emilia Clarke said they have met in a shoot for the rising stars in Hollywood years ago as they were both featured in highly popular projects such as Game of Thrones and Hunger Games, the two only got to meet during test readings. It has been interesting to see the chemistry between the two actors considering that this is their first intimate project together.

The main conundrum of the movie about Will Traynor deciding to end his life has been a conflict for many viewers as it has been for the main casts.

Should he really have a choice to end his life? Is he being selfish or is he being generous? Can Lou change his mind?

Because of the whirlwind of events that would happen between Lou’s and Will’s relationship, the two have discovered a different life after they met each other.

With the success of the movie, raking about $53 million in sales, fans are wondering if Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin would ever appear in a new project again. For that, we just have to wait and see.
