Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen Turn 30: Style Divas Go From ‘Full House’ Stars To ‘Fuller House’ Drama

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were born on June 13, 1986, making it time to send them happy birthday greetings as they turn 30. Looking back on the lives of the famous twins as they celebrate the big 3-0, Refinery 29 points out that the sisters devoted 18 years to providing entertainment for the world.

The famous twins have traveled a long way from their early years as child stars. But during that period, Mary-Kate and Ashley performed on Full House for eight seasons. The Olsen twins appeared in over 12 films and provided the voices for an animated series.

The sisters also have acquired a reputation for breaking the rules, from fashion to social media to the entertainment industry, noted E! News.

Mary-Kate and Ashley dared to be the only stars from the original Full House show who turned down the opportunity to star in the first season of the reboot. Not even a guest spot could tempt the Olsen twins, who are proudly at the helm of their very own company.

Focused on fashion, the sisters also made it clear that they set trends, not follow them, by appearing at the CFDA Awards in notably different styles. But Mary-Kate and Ashley also have made it clear that when it comes to social media, they prefer to stay private. It wasn’t until 2016 that they decided it was time to show off their selfie skills.

But the sisters also have made it clear they don’t need social media to survive, such as creating (and sporting) $55,000 snakeskin backpacks.

Despite the Olsen twins’ desire to stay out of the spotlight, the attention to the Full House reboot has repeatedly brought the focus back to the former child stars. Even though Mary-Kate and Ashley declined to reprise their role when Fuller House first began filming, Candace Cameron Bure told Us Weekly that the potential still exists.

Candace offered hope to those who are longing for the Olsen twins to join the cast during the second season. Dishing on what’s ahead for Fuller House, Bure noted, however, that they already have a full house.

“It would be great if they did, but I think the fans can see, too, that the show is so full already,” pointed out Cameron Bure. “We would love for them to join, but we have a lot to do even if they don’t.”

The Netflix show features Candace as D.J. Tanner, with Stephanie Tanner portrayed by Jodie Sweetin and Kimmy Gibbler played by Andrea Barber. But despite the return of so many members of the original cast, the writers and producers had a challenge when it came to the obviously absent Michelle Tanner.

With Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen opting out of the first season of "Fuller House," writers found a way to explain their character's absence.

Consequently, the show dished up a series of jokes to cover the fact that Danny Tanner’s youngest daughter was never seen. One jab used the real lives of the Olsen twins by proclaiming that Michelle Tanner was busily creating her New York City fashion empire. In addition, Kimmy, D.J., and Stephanie mocked the situation with a voice message for Michelle.

As for how Mary-Kate and Ashley feel about having their missing character mocked? Cameron Bure shared that she has not heard from the Olsen twins about the jokes.

“No, I didn’t hear any reaction from them,” she admitted, adding praise for the series. “We’re just charging on with what we got and what we have is something pretty great.”

However, when Candace and Jodie Sweetin talked with ET about the second season of Fuller House, they gave some clues about the potential for “old school cameos.” Does that mean Mary-Kate and Ashley might guest star?

“We have some fun new guest stars on this year,” teased Bure.

“There are definitely going to be some more throwback guest stars on this season. So old Full House fans will have fun seeing some very familiar faces.”

And when it came to directly answering the question of whether the Olsen sisters would be among those throwback guest stars on Season 2, Sweetin revealed that she does not know if the speculation about the return of Mary-Kate and Ashley would turn into reality.

“The door’s always been open to them,” emphasized the actress. “So we’ll see.”
