‘Titanfall 2’ Release Around Three Weeks Of ‘Battlefield 1’

The question of the Titanfall 2 release coming close to the launch of Battlefield 1 was slightly answered Wednesday. Electronic Arts attended the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Technology Conference, where Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen gave a release for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC mech shooter from Respawn Entertainment.

Battlefield 1 is currently slated to launch on October 18 for Early Enlister Edition purchasers, and October 21 for everyone else. Jorgenson explained the Titanfall 2 release will be roughly three weeks from the World War 1 shooter during a discussion at the Bank of America event (via DualShockers).

Jorgenson notably did not specify whether that three week window falls before or after the Battlefield 1 release. If it is before, that puts the Titanfall 2 release date somewhere around September 27. If it is afterwards, the release date is around November 8.

The latter date is the most eyebrow-raising, as it puts the launch of Titanfall 2 just days after Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which is scheduled to hit all platforms on Friday, November 4. Jorgenson said Electronic Arts is “not uncomfortable with that,” and actually appears to be part of a strategy to “come from both side in the quarter” in an attempt to dethrone the reigning first-person shooter champ.

The mega-publisher previously stated it was fine with both Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 1 releasing close to one another. EA CEO Andrew Wilson believes the first-person shooter category is big enough to support both games during the 2016 holiday season, and both appeal to different audiences within the genre.

“In terms of the Titanfall, Battlefield One question, this is a giant category in our industry, $4.5 billion category. There is a very broad and diverse set of players who play games in that category who are looking for – to fulfill different game play motivations,” Wilson explained, as captured in a Seeking Alpha transcript of an EA 2016 fourth quarter earnings call.

“Some people play very quick play, some people more strategic play, and some people want both in different context. The result of those, we feel like we actually have a really strong position to deliver the broadest set of game play mechanics as it relates to first-person shooter genre across the two titles, and feel very confident that we are well-positioned to do very well in that category in a year. Certainly as you see, the reception around Battlefield 1 we feel very good about that. The energy around Titanfall 2 is also building very nicely, and we look forward to showing more of both of those titles at EA Play in June.”

Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 will have not just each other and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare to deal with during the 2016 holiday shopping season, though. Activision is packing Infinite Warfare with a remake of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and notes that pre-orders are off to a strong start for the more expensive bundle.

Additionally, Gears of War 4 is launching as an Xbox One exclusive, and possibly for the PC as well, on October 11. It is a third-person shooter, but it is another contender in the general shooter genre. Meanwhile, the holiday season is slowly filling up with games outside of the shooter genre, such as Mafia III, Final Fantasy XV, Dishonored 2, and plenty more announcements planned for E3 in less than two weeks.

Fans of Titanfall 2 should see plenty of the game from the EA Play event and livestream scheduled for Sunday, June 13. The publisher will showcase the game along with Battlefield 1, the next Mass Effect, and more during the pre-E3 event.
