Is a female version of The Expendables already in production? Considering The Expendables 2 is currently the champion of the American box office, it’s not surprising that the studio is seriously interested in getting another sequel in the works. While we’re waiting for that to happen, another company has reportedly begun production on an all-female action flick inspired by Sylvester Stallone’s hit action franchise.
According to Cinema Blend, production company 1984 Private Defense Contractors is moving forward with an all-female version of the hit series. The company, which also produced The Bitter Pill and the Brad Pitt thriller Killing Them Softly, has already tapped writer Dutch Southern to handle scripting duties. Although details about the plot are sketchy, producers have stated that the film will feature “several prominent actress affiliated with the action genre.”
The Expendables 2 director Simon West, meanwhile, has similar ideas should he find himself behind the camera for the next inevitable installment. If producers decide to head in an all-female direction, West has his eyes on some pretty big stars.
“I like the idea of the Expenda-Belles where it’s seven or eight women mercenaries,” West explained to E! News. “It would be Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz, Mila Jovovich, the list goes on. Helen Mirren, Jamie Lee Curtis would be great.”
If you’re worried about the guys being bumped from the series to make room for the ladies, West assures everyone that their jobs are safe and sound. “No, it would be running parallel,” he explained. “They would meet up and then they would fight and they would join up and save each other.”
The Expendables 2, which marked Chuck Norris’ triumphant return to the big screen, beat out The Bourne Legacy for the top spot at the North American box office. The star-studded sequel made $28.6 million over the weekend.
