Taylor Swift Rocks Out To ‘The Middle’ In A New Apple Music Commercial

Taylor Swift has undeniably been Apple’s biggest promotional piece for their relatively new Apple Music service. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that Swift released her latest commercial for the service via Twitter this morning, and it provides a treat for fans of both Taylor Swift and Jimmy Eat World.

According to the Verge, Taylor Swift’s latest commercial for Apple Music was relatively less painful than her previous advertisements for the service. The video features Taylor Swift in what we presume isn’t her own bathroom as she pulls up a “getting ready to go out” playlist on her iPhone. Viewers of the commercial are then treated to Taylor Swift rocking out to “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World, at which point, she tells fans that she used to love the song back in her school days.

The video which sees Taylor Swift flinging herself around the bathroom whilst applying lipstick is undeniably very impactful and has already been retweeted over twelve thousand times on the social network. However, the tweet also makes it very clear that this wasn’t designed as a treat for her fans, but as more of a promotional piece for Apple’s Music service. The video ends with an Apple Music splash screen, whilst Swift links to the firm’s Twitter account in her message to fans.

According to Entertainment Weekly, it’s already well known that Taylor Swift is a big fan of Jimmy Eat World. You might remember back in 2011, when on her “Speak Now” tour, the band joined her on stage to perform “The Middle.” In fact, they even covered one of her own hits, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” for an iTunes session in 2013. If those previous performances and her new commercial are anything to go by, it’s definitely fair to say that Jimmy Eat World were a big influence on Taylor Swift’s music career and judging by the contents of this particular commercial for their Music service, that isn’t something Apple are afraid to capitalize on.

Taylor Swift working so closely with Apple definitely heralds a big difference to her position around the service back in just June last year. Swift had previously called the service “shocking and disappointing” over Apple’s decision not to pay artists for music played as part of the free trial. It’s a decision that Apple later backtracked on, welcoming Taylor Swift’s “1989” album to the service, whilst working more closely with her to produce commercials such as this one.

In fact, you might even remember that Swift’s “1989 World Tour” documentary premiered early on iTunes before it made its way to any other service.

It remains to be seen whether or not the iPhone demonstrated in this particular commercial actually belongs to Taylor Swift. However, if it does, some of the other songs featured in the playlist definitely give us a glimpse into Swift’s music tastes. Particularly notable were “Welcome to the Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance, along with “Heads Will Roll!” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and not to be forgotten, “No One Knows” by Queens Of The Stone Age.

This particular Apple Music commercial featuring Taylor Swift sets a good path ahead for future commercials. For now, though, if this commercial and previous efforts are anything to go by, it definitely appears that Apple and Swift have put their differences aside. In fact, their ever-closer partnership could mean that Taylor Swift’s next single or even album could feature earlier on Apple Music than other streaming services, which would undeniably bring a fairly large chunk of Swift’s huge fan base to the service.
