Mother Whose Baby Nearly Died Says A Duggar Attended Her Home Birth, Discusses Why Jill Dillard’s Midwife Trainer Lost Her License

An angry mother is speaking out about her ordeal with one of Jill Dillard’s midwife trainers that left her newborn near death, with just a minuscule chance of survival. Though the newborn survived, the child is now permanently disabled and the mother says that it was this botched home birth that resulted in Jill Dillard’s midwife trainer to lose her license to practice in the state of Texas. The mother also informed Duggar fans that Jill Dillard was present for the botched home birth, and voiced her disagreement with her trainer’s decision to delay the infant’s transfer to the hospital.

Mother Tiffany Nance has broken her silence on her botched home birth with midwife Venessa Giron from Arkansas. Venessa is a well-known lay midwife in the area who received national attention when some of the Duggar daughters from the reality series 19 Kids and Counting were revealed to be training under the midwife as apprentices. Notably, Jill Dillard worked alongside the Arkansas midwife as she trained for her Certified Professional Midwife certification. Jill would go on to obtain her license, but not before Venessa Giron ran into licensing trouble of her own.

According to Tiffany Nance, and minutes from the Arkansas State Board of Health confirm, Venessa Giron was the acting midwife for Tiffany when she gave birth to daughter Jozzie. The infant was born with a strep b infection, but according to Tiffany, it took two hours before midwife Venessa would transfer the baby to the hospital for treatment.

“She failed to recognize the signs of a group b strep infection then proceeded to not transfer her until 2 hours after the start of respiratory distress started. If my baby would have been treated within the first hour it could have prevented her near death and now cerebral palsy due to multiple brain bleeds.”

The Facebook page Duggar Family News: Life is not all pickles and hairspray first pointed out the post noting that the rumors have been floating around for some time so it is nice to finally hear Tiffany’s side of the story.

Rumors of this event have been floating around for a couple of years and since this disastrous delivery happened in the home the Duggars rented out to Venessa, the house with the pool next to the Duggars that they now film talking heads in…… so it’s worth mentioning on this page. The Duggars also seemed to have kicked her out of the house shortly after Jill’s wedding. Why? Maybe Tiffany Nance could fill us in.

As a result of the strep b, baby Jozzie now suffers a host of medical conditions, but is lucky to be alive. As a result of the “negligence” on Venessa’s part, her license to practice midwifery in Texas was voided. Though the midwife’s license was void in Texas, Venessa continues to practice midwifery in Arkansas and Oklahoma. The issue was also touched on in one of midwife Venessa’s Facebook posts, in which she admits the medical hearing didn’t go in her favor.

Tiffany points out that it wasn’t just Venessa attending her home birth. In fact, she says the famous Duggar daughter, Jill Dillard, was acting as one of the apprentices during the ordeal. However, the mother isn’t blaming the Duggar daughter, and instead says that all of the apprentices disagreed with Venessa’s assessment and felt the baby should have been sent to the hospital sooner. Despite the fact that Jill was present for the birth, the mother says that Jill Dillard and the other apprentices were never made to testify in her court case due to the overwhelming evidence against the midwife in the case.

“Yes, Jill was there but none of the apprentices there were OK with Venessa’s decision to not transfer [Jozzie]. [Jill] wasn’t [at the medical board hearing as there] was no need for her to be a witness. Venessa had enough evidence against her to make it an easy trial. Jill was at the birth and made some notes in my record but she did not deliver [Jozzie.]”

While Tiffany puts the blame entirely on Venessa, who she claims slept through much of her over-24 hours of labor, she notes that she does not feel the apprentices such as Jill Dillard should be punished, as they were simply following Venessa’s advice. While the full details of the medical hearing are not available, an online license search for Venessa Giron shows that her Texas midwife license has been revoked.

Venessa Giron
One of Jill Dillard’s midwife trainers, Venessa Giron, had her license revoked in Texas.

Interestingly, while some have questioned the Duggar daughter’s training due to the apprenticeship under a midwife who had her license subsequently revoked, the midwife service that Venessa Giron currently works is also distancing itself from the Duggars after Jessa Seewald’s home birth problems. A Mommy’s Butterfly responded to rumors following Jessa Seewald’s birth that the midwife service had attended Jessa’s birth. The midwife group went so far at the time to seemingly indicate that they felt Jessa did not receive proper midwifery care during her birth by stating her birth does not reflect midwife care in the state.

“I didn’t want to respond in this forum but due to the overwhelming support and calls and emails. We were not Jessa Seewald’s midwives. I am sad that Jessa suffered a postpartum hemorrhage. I am happy that Jessa and ‘Quincy’ are home, safe and sound. There were decisions made that do not fairly reflect home birth nor the care of the midwives in this state. But what matters most is Healthy Baby, Healthy Mama!”

What do you think about Jill Dillard’s midwife trainer losing her license for “negligence” for a home birth that Jill also attended? What about the fact that the mother claims none of the attending midwives in training, including Jill, agreed with the midwife’s decision?
