‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Season 2 Trailer Released — Even More Bonkers Than Last Season, But Darker [HD Video]

Not long after Netflix released the exciting trailer for the second season of the Marvel drama Daredevil, the streaming platform has given comedy fans something to sink their teeth into as well. The full trailer for Season 2 of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has just hit the internet, and you can see it right now at the top of the page.

The clips from Season 2 suggest that The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will continue the off-the-wall comedy of the first season, but without having to worry about all the exposition. For those who are new to the show, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt follows the titular character, played by The Office‘s Ellie Kemper, as she escapes the clutches of an apocalyptic cult leader who kept her and three other women locked in a bunker for 15 years, deceiving them into thinking the world above ground had ended. The show chronicles the struggles of an adult woman with the mind of a tween girl as she tries to adapt to the modern world without losing any of her unflinching optimism.

This trailer came on the heels of a tiny teaser last month, which provided almost no new story details, according to Flavor Wire. But this full-on preview hints at a large number of subplots in Season 2. This includes Kimmy getting a job as a Christmas elf, signing up for therapy, pursuing romance, and helping her former employer leave her husband without forfeiting her status as a “trophy wife.” While these may seem like spoilers for big chunks of plot in Season 2 of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the trailer only shows tiny slivers of Tina Fey’s iconic humor without revealing much of the overall story.

The thing that The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is best known for is Kimmy’s hilariously upbeat personality, which is essentially an even sunnier and more naive version of her character on The Office. While many of the supporting characters face the harsh realities of life in the big city with self-pity and sarcasm, Kimmy Schmidt takes on the challenges of adulthood with sincerity, a smile, and a song in her heart. The most memorable clip from the Season 2 trailer shows Kimmy charging up her perkiness by watching a video of a cat and a rabbit cuddling, all while singing an impromptu song about animal friendship. Yeah. This is the exact same Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt that fans came to know and love.

Despite the consistent pep in Kimmy’s step, Ellie Kemper revealed at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour that Season 2 would deal with much darker issues than Season 1, according to Billboard.

“She grapples with some pretty heavy life stuff in this season.”

Co-creator of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Tina Fey explained that Season 2 is mainly about “deeper emotional and life issues that she kind of has to really get into.”

Fey also revealed that episodes will also run a bit longer in Season 2 than in Season 1.

Another Season 2 detail that isn’t revealed in the trailer is the introduction of Kimmy Schmidt’s mother to the story, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

“What I know about her is that she wore short skirts and maybe wasn’t the most attentive mother, so it might be a sad revelation who the mother was,” Kemper said. “[Kimmy] didn’t really have a family to go back to, so I’m interested to know who that mom will be. I have a feeling whatever sadness is there will be dealt with a humorous way.”

Season 2 of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will hit Netflix on April 15.
