Ian Somerhalder And Nina Dobrev To Reunite On ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Finale? Yes, If Producers Have Their Way

The Vampire Diaries has undergone a lot of transformation in the past year. Along with the departure of Nina Dobrev and a subsequent change in story line, the series has been moved to a new night. With so many changes happening and the rumors of a possible cancellation, is it possible that Dobrev will return in the finale so that her character, Elena can reunite with Ian Somerhalder’s Damon.

During a recent interview with Collider, producer Caroline Dries opened up about a possible reunion between Somerhalder and Dobrev. Although Dries admitted that Dobrev would not be returning any time soon, she did leave open the possibility of the actress making a cameo as Elena in the series finale.

“No. I would say that, if The CW called today and was like, ‘By the way, Season 7 is the last season,’ then I think we would scramble to make sure that she was in the finale,” Dries shared. “But as of right now, we’re acting like the show will go on, so no.”

Dries and her team of writers have kept the character alive despite Dobrev’s exit from the show. Dries explained how challenging it is to keep Elena’s memory a part of the story even though Dobrev is not physically on the show anymore.

“It’s a total challenge and it helps that she is Damon’s touchstone for every decision that he makes, even when she was on the show,” she stated. “It helps that that is why Damon is making the decisions that he’s making. So yeah, I still think that she does stay present.”

At the same time, Somerhalder recently sat down with Collider and explained how important Dobrev’s character is to his storyline this season. With Elena still a large part of the plot, is it possible that she will make a reappearance on the series?

“It all stems from that and his desire to keep her close. The biggest thing he has to come to terms with is that he’s dangerous and he’s volatile, and he makes really bad decisions,” Somerhalder explained. “If he can relinquish that need and abdicate that throne of feeling that he has the power to protect her… and if he would just fucking stop for one second and really do the math and look at statistics, he’s put her in more danger than anyone she’s ever known or ever will know.”

Meanwhile, Ian Somerhalder was also questioned about the possibility of the series ending after this season. In reply, The Vampire Diaries star revealed that he hasn’t’ thought much about the end of the show and is instead focused on making it through Season 7.

“Not really. It’s so much information to process that I don’t know how we’d even go about that right now. Right now, we’re just trying to get through this season,” he stated.

The second half of Season 7 is currently underway. According to TV Fanatic, the series is having issues adjusting to all of the recent changes. In fact, ever since Dobrev’s departure, The Vampire Diaries has not captured the same success it enjoyed in earlier seasons. This is one reason why the series was moved to a different night.

At this point, it isn’t clear if the network will renew the show for another season or if the seventh will be its last. If this season does end up being the final one, then the only thing fans can hope for is that the writers are given plenty of heads up in order to give the show an ending it truly deserves.

The seventh season of The Vampire Diaries continues in its new time on Friday nights on The CW.
