Pretty Little Liars is gearing up to head into the second half of its sixth season, and while a mid-season hiatus may not be new to the series, the plot will be. Having solved for A, the girls, better known as the Liars, will be facing an all-new villain with all-new mysteries. There’s really just one question on every PLL fan’s mind at this point, however.
Who is in the coffin?
The new poster released by ABC Family (soon to be Freeform) has much to catch one’s eye. For starters, the mere look of the girls…women reminds fans of Pretty Little Liars that there will be that five-year time jump with the show’s return. No more high school.
By the looks of things, Hanna (Ashley Benson), Emily (Shay Mitchell), Aria (Lucy Hale), and Spencer (Troian Bellisario) are adjusting well to adulthood, too. The women are all dressed to kill, and judging by that mid-strut pose, they have the attitudes to match.
And just what are they carrying in that coffin? The quote at the top of the poster suggests that their secrets have followed them back to Rosewood.
“Are you strong enough to carry your secrets?”
Pretty Little Liars: What we know so far
There has actually been a good amount revealed about the season 6B plot through various teasers. For instance, the new opening credits montage reveals a fifth liar. Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) has been added to the mix.
Following that, ABC released the first four minutes of the first episode of season 6B. When Pretty Little Liars picks up after the time jump, PLL fans will find that each of the five women has gone off in a different direction, literally as well as figuratively.
We know from the DC set reshoot that Spencer is working in the nation’s capital. Meanwhile, Aria is in Boston, Emily is in California, and Hanna, working in the fashion industry, is most likely based out of New York City. Alison has remained in Rosewood.
In fact, Alison will be the one to reunite everyone, and that may not be as happy of a reunion as it would seem. Alison is hoping to pursuade her friends to come together on CeCe’s behalf in the hopes that their testimony will convince the judge to consider parole. Unfortunately, the liars aren’t overwhelmed with forgiveness for their former tormentor.
There was also a glimpse of Alison’s husband in the season 6A finale of Pretty Little Liars, though there was no mention of him in that four-minute clip. It may be that there was just no cause to bring him into those opening scenes, or Alison may yet have to meet him, leaving PLL romantics something else to look forward to in season 6B.
Little is known about the villain in season 6B, other than he seems to have targeted Alison. The girls are seen racing into the classroom to warn Alison that “he” is coming for her.
While series showrunner I. Marlene King hasn’t revealed any identities, she has promised that the mysteries wouldn’t drag out, as has been the case in past seasons. The Pretty Little Liars executive did offer one other clue as well. Ms. King mentioned that the new villain is related to one character already on the show.
Well, that certainly narrows it down.
Rumors indicate Aria as the new villain in town, though the “he” pronoun would seem to negate that theory. Could Aria be working with someone else? Maybe Ezra?
Pretty Little Liars will return with season 6B on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, on Freeform, formerly ABC Family.
