Sylvester Stallone: Could He Finally Win An Oscar For His Role As Rocky?

Sylvester Stallone is the genius behind the character Rocky Balboa and he wrote the very first Rocky movie, which earned ten Academy Award nominations, including the nomination for best picture. Now Sylvester Stallone is back as Rocky in the seventh installment of the movie franchise, Creed.

Creed opened in theaters on November 25. See the trailer here.

It is the story of how Rocky coaches Adonis Creed (played by Michael B. Jordan), the son of his original rival, Apollo Creed. In the movie, Rocky is more of a background character, but that didn’t stop Sylvester Stallone from giving a stunning performance. Entertainment Weekly praises the film.

“Creed is as formulaic and sentimental as you’d expect any Rocky movie to be, but Jordan and Stallone (looser and more vulnerable than he’s been in 30 years) give the film an undeniable, lump-in-the-throat poignancy. In the end it’s a movie about legacy, and it more than preserves the Rocky franchise’s. It reminds you why it was great in the first place.”

USA Today also praises the movie and Sylvester Stallone’s performance.

“Stallone will always be best known as Rocky. And for the first time in decades, he’s amazing in the role, giving heartfelt speeches and adding a pathos not seen since the early films. It’s a reminder that Stallone at his core is much more than the macho action hero Millennial moviegoers grew up watching.”

Many feel that Creed could be Oscar-worthy, and if this is the case and Sylvester Stallone is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Rocky, Gold Derby reports he will break the record for the longest period of time between Oscar nominations for the same role. This record is currently held by Paul Newman for his role as Eddie Felson, for which he was nominated as Best Actor for the 1961 movie The Hustler and then won for the same role for the movie The Color of Money in 1986.

Not only is Sylvester Stallone’s performance in Creed astounding, but so is the performance of Michael B. Jordan as Creed. And where would any film be without its music, which helps create an atmosphere charge with emotion. Music in the Rocky films includes the likes of James Brown’s “Living in America” and Survivor’s “The Eye of the Tiger.” These songs are almost as unforgettable as the movies!

Sylvester Stallone will always be known for his role as Rocky Balboa. The actor spent his teenage years in Philadelphia and he is always greeted with much fanfare when he returns. The Christian Science Monitor reports that Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said Rocky put Philly on the map.

“The movie put Philadelphia literally on the map.”

As for Sylvester Stallone, he has a message for the youth of today’s Philly.

“I started skipping rocks in the Schuylkill River over there when I was 12 years old. So all you kids in the audience there, if you don’t think you can make it up these steps of life… don’t you believe that. Because if I can do it, you can do it.”

There isn’t much better advice the famous movie star can give the youth of his hometown. And he has proven it can be done. Now can he prove his portrayal of Rocky Balboa is truly worthy of an Academy Award? Only time will tell.
