The 2015 #SoulTrainAwards Trends: Erykah Badu Disses Iggy Azalea [Video]

According to Twitter, the hashtag #SoulTrainAwards is trending, with 23,500 tweets coming into the social media site about the 2015 Soul Train Awards. Hosted by Erykah Badu, the awards started off with a big diss from Badu to Iggy Azalea. Erykah was performing a skit wherein she pretended to talk to various rappers, telling them that rappers with “Lil” in their names couldn’t come to the awards. Badu said that she has a reputation for having a bad effect upon rappers, making them want to wear crotchet pants and change religions once they got with Badu. That’s when Erykah used the opportunity to diss Iggy by calling her songs something other than art.

“I’m banning all rap this year. Don’t get me wrong, I love hip hop. No red cups. Only three tattoos per arm. Iggy Azalea? Oh you can come because what you do is definitely not rap.”

Jidenna took the first award home from the 2015 Soul Train Awards and told a funny story about his Nigerian father refusing to put a test on the fridge that Jidenna only scored a 98 percent on. That’s when his dad asked where the other two points were, and instructed Jidenna to go back and get the other two points for his test to be displayed prominently. Jidenna then held up his Soul Train Award and told his father that he now had his additional two points.

There’s not news yet on what Iggy thinks of Erykah’s diss. Iggy has been pretty quiet on Twitter, with her most recent tweet as of this writing going out to her more than 5 million followers on November 1. However, that fact hasn’t stopped folks from creating GIFs of Iggy’s supposed reaction to Badu’s diss. It’s not the first time Iggy has faced backlash for affecting an African-American accent or cadence when she raps, and resorting to her Australian tongue when she speaks. Nicki Minaj has been accused of “throwing shade” at Iggy in the past as well, as reported by Us.

Badu, meanwhile, continued her 2015 Soul Train Awards antics. She introduced Jeremih Felton, better known as Jeremih, and the Chicago artist sang his hit song “Planes.” Previously, Jeremih was well known for his “Birthday Sex” debut single.

Badu’s cult classic song “Call Tyrone” became a bit of fodder for the 2015 Soul Train Awards as well. In the famous song, Badu sings about a guy who never buys her anything and always makes her pay when it’s time to go out. Badu sang that he was the type of guy who never came to see her by himself, but always brought a crew of guys, including one named Tyrone. As a result, Badu urged her bad boyfriend to call Tyrone, so he could help her boyfriend come get his stuff and move out.

Despite Erykah dissing Iggy, fans still praised Badu’s killer vocals, which were on full display at the 2015 Soul Train Awards.

All sorts of topical current buzz popped up in the Twitter timeline under the #SoulTrainAwards hashtag, like Patti LaBelle’s sweet potato pie buzz. But it was Badu’s “Call Tyrone” song in the midst of a routine that encouraged people to put their phones down that brought the house up in a roar. Especially when “Tyrone” hit the stage and told Badu to keep his name out of her mouth. He complained that he’d been driving people back to their mothers’ homes for years because of the song.
