‘Doctor Who,’ ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Crossover Discussed By Peter Capaldi And Peter Jackson

Doctor Who is known for his crazy adventures in his time machine phone box called the TARDIS. Apparently the current Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi, is in New Zealand promoting his famous show, one that has a history spanning 52 years. Stuff reveals that in a candid discussion with fans at a Q&A hosted by local Adam Spencer, Capaldi said he’d love to film an episode of Doctor Who in New Zealand.

“Well, we’d love to come here you know, It’s so incredible here, with fabulous locations. You’ve got some talented crews here, it would be wonderful to come and do an episode and there was talk of that, I think that almost happened, and it may yet.”

He went on to say that the people in New Zealand were fabulous.

“When we drove from the airport to the hotel we said this is fantastic and people laughed at us because we think the drive from the airport to the hotel is spectacular so goodness knows what lies in store because I am going to stay on for a week.”

As for Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, he is a huge Doctor Who fan. Metro reports Capaldi visited the Hobbiton movie set while in New Zealand and Steven Moffat, showrunner for Doctor Who, spoke about how much he would love Jackson to direct an episode of the show.

“He’s a genuine big old Doctor Who fan. He’s mentioned it and then we email him and he doesn’t reply… I think his plan is we all go to New Zealand and spend six months making it and our plan is he comes to Cardiff and makes it in 12 days. There’s that disparity.”

There most certainly have been a few links between Doctor Who and the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. For instance, Capaldi was in the 50th Anniversary special for Doctor Who along with Sir Ian McKellan. Also, Sylvester McCoy, who played Radagast in The Hobbit, played the seventh Doctor between 1987 and 1989.

Warning: Spoiler Alert!

For now, while fans wait for Jackson to come around to a Doctor Who directorial debut, they will have to settle for the show as it is. Fortunately, that’s not at all a bad thing. Forbes reports that in episode 11 of series 9, “Heaven Sent,” we see the demise of Clara and the difficulty the Doctor has with her death. See the trailer here.

“If you think because she’s dead that I am weak, then you understand very little. If you were any part of killing her and you’re not afraid, then you understand nothing at all. So for your own sake, understand this: I am the Doctor, I’m coming to find you and I will never, ever stop.”

The episode is gripping and intense, perhaps more than any Doctor Who episode has ever been. The mid-season finale of series 9 is just days away and will reveal an incredible conclusion to the events of “Heaven Sent.” The trailer can be seen here.

Whether or not Peter Jackson ever gets involved with Doctor Who, the show will remain as brilliant as ever. But it really would be cool to see an episode filmed in Wellington or somewhere near Hobbiton, perhaps. Maybe one day fans will get to see a melding of Doctor Who and Middle Earth. Until then, the worlds remain apart. Besides, the Doctor seems to have himself in a right mess and he needs to get out of it.
