‘Walking Dead’ Theme Park Will Let Fans Wield Katana And Crossbow To Kill Fake Zombies

Everyone loves the zombie apocalypse — as long as it’s pretend, of course. But a unique, and possibly terrifying, Walking Dead theme park will soon bring the end of the world one step closer to reality.

The attraction will be quite darker than most, but not quite as gory as the show. It will also leave out all of the post-apocalyptic angst and existential dread that makes Walking Dead such an excellent show.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, a sneak peek of the indoor theme park was unveiled at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions annual expo this week in Orlando, Florida.

So far, there aren’t too many details about “The Walking Dead: Battle of Survival,” but according to Slash Film, fans can expect it to be pretty similar to other rides built by its creator, Sally Corp. Among those features: 3D projection, physical sets, animatronics, and interactive elements, as well as real fire, water, and wind elements. Most of the company’s rides move participants through an actual physical environment and allow them to interact through screens and animated characters while armed with plastic weapons.

In other words, the attraction may be nothing more than a zombie shoot-up. Riders can choose their own weapon (Michonne’s katana, Daryl’s crossbow, Sasha’s rifle, or perhaps Eastman’s aikido stick?) and hack their way through scenarios that have multiple endings.

And since this is The Walking Dead, one of those endings leads the participant to a grisly end.

“The whole point is to collect supplies and defend yourself against walkers,” said Sally Corp’s creative director Rich Hill.

The theme park with also feature both characters and settings from the show, including Woodbury, and (hopefully) Herschel’s farm, the prison, Terminus, and Alexandria.

Even better, the effects guru who makes the series so wonderfully disgusting, Greg Nicotero, will approve the ride’s features. But it won’t be as intense and gruesome as the show, so don’t hold your breath for buckets of fake blood, piles of gooey intestines, or the real stank of rotting zombies.

Regardless, Hill assured that it will have “tons of scares” with “all the same feeling of the show.” Except when the ride is over, your loved ones will still be alive, the electrical grid will still be working, and you won’t have to hunt dogs for your next meal.

This attraction only adds to a plethora of other movie and TV-based rides inspired by The Hunger Games, Titanic, and Sons of Anarchy, Entertainment Weekly reported. Sally Corp, which builds animatronics and attractions, has been developing the ride for a year, and they’re pitching it to many theme parks hoping for a buyer.

The company wants The Walking Dead to be an “anchor attraction” for some theme park. Right now, there’s no indication as to when it will be open to the public, but its design is finished and it’s ready for a home. According to Inside the Magic (which has some amazing pictures), the company is in the middle of making a deal with a park and just waiting for a buyer to “sign off.”

Sally Corp has just released two other fairly dark rides — “Justice League: Alien Invasion 3D” at Warner Bros and “Justice League: Battle For Metropolis” at Six Flags Over Texas — which could provide some hint as to what the Walking Dead theme park ride could be like.

Until then, feel free to brainstorm some possible additions to the ride. MTV News provided a few interesting options: a Terminus barbeque (hopefully featuring chicken, not people); the Governor’s museum of zombie heads; a gift shop where you can buy Rick’s sheriff’s hat, a fake Abraham moustache, and perhaps even a Eugene mullet wig; and a weapons training center, where you can learn how to wield a katana or aikido stick.

Some other options: Carol’s Kitchen, where you can threaten young children with chocolate chip cookies; zombie-killing practice (Deanna could use some help); and post-apocalyptic medical training, where you learn how to cut off infected limbs.

Any other ideas?
