‘Top Gun 2’ Rumors Sparked By Val Kilmer’s Facebook Post, Follows Up With Confusing Details

American actor Val Kilmer may have rekindled the rumor about making Top Gun 2, which is supposedly a sequel to the 1986 classic, after he posted on social media about it.

Kilmer, 55, recently shared a Facebook status that said he accepted the role for Top Gun 2, and that he did not even bother to read the script before saying yes.

“I just got offered Top Gun 2 – not often you get to say ‘yes’ without reading the script… ‘It’s starring Gene Hackman…’ ‘Yes’ ‘The director is Francis Coppola…’ ‘Yes!'” – Kilmer said in the Facebook post.

In addition, the Batman Forever actor also mentioned award-winning film producer Jerry Bruckheimer and veteran actor Tom Cruise in the post. Kilmer also said that they miss Tony Scott, the film’s director who committed suicide in 2012, but showed his excitement in firing up “some fighter jets again.”

It was apparent that his social media followers, as well as avid Top Gun fans, were pretty excited about the announcement. The post immediately gained steam and was shared over 1,000 times only an hour after Kilmer posted it.

However, Kilmer made a follow-up post that caused a bit of confusion to his already hyped up followers.

“Francis Coppola and Gene Hackman are examples of what an actor says ‘yes’ to. They are not involved. So sorry for the misunderstanding,” he said.

This could mean that neither Hackman nor Coppola would be in the sequel if there ever is one in the works. Then again, there hasn’t been any official statement about Top Gun 2 whatsoever.

“This has been talked about for a long, long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role,” he said. The actor also apologized for jumping the “top gun” with his post.

If Kilmer rejoins the cast, he would be reprising his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazanski, who served as the “foil” to Cruise’s Maverick.

Speaking of Cruise, he did say in the past that he was interested in returning to his old role should Top Gun 2 be released. It was the classic action film that pushed the Mission Impossible actor to Hollywood’s elite group of A-listers.

If both major characters successfully make their return, then the rumored sequel will definitely be a hit to old school action film fans.

There is also a number of possible military conflicts regarding where the sequel could be set. If production of Top Gun 2 proceeds, the services of two veteran fighter jet pilots may be employed once more.

It is still unclear whether Hackman or Coppola would make an appearance, but there are plenty of other actors to choose from for the film.

While it has not been in the news as often as it should, the Top Gun 2 sequel has been under development for some time.

Skydance Productions CEO David Ellison said earlier this year that Top Gun 2 is in development and will be set in the present day.

“It is very much set in today where we have drone technology and fifth-generation fighters. It’s exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots,” Ellison said.

Kilmer’s confirmation to rejoin the cast via his Facebook post could also silence rumors that he has been battling cancer.

The actor’s representatives said in January that Kilmer was undergoing some tests to check a “possible tumor.” The actor has since stressed repeatedly that it was a mere “complication” that needed to be observed extensively.

If Kilmer does, indeed, wear the cool “Iceman” on Top Gun 2 once again, then he’d better start getting back in shape.
