‘Fear The Walking Dead’: Entering Season 2, Characters Are Yet To Realize The Outbreak Is Their “Extinction Event”

The Season 1 finale of AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead was tied up nicely and placed the surviving characters in a position where they know everyone is infected. However, moving forward into Season 2, will they learn more about the outbreak as they set sail in Victor Strand’s yacht?

The death of Liza Ortiz (Elizabeth Rodriguez) in the Season 1 finale of Fear The Walking Dead helped the other remaining characters understand that everyone is infected, that they all return after they die — regardless of whether it is from a bite or not. While that was a pivotal piece of information that is handy for the characters to have as they move forward into Season 2, there is still more information about the outbreak for them to learn according to Fear’s showrunner, Dave Erickson when he sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to break down Episode 6.

“There are still things for them to discover. They haven’t had the benefit of the CDC download. They know the city has fallen and know things are incredibly bad and they know that this is happening in other states and potentially other countries but they haven’t had anybody say to them, ‘The world is over; this is our extinction event.’ That’s something they’ll have to process as they move through season 2 as well.”

Erickson also hints at the fact the characters may search for a “clean” location in Season 2 of Fear The Walking Dead. While viewers know that when Liza said everyone was infected, she meant everywhere, across the entire world, for the characters in Fear, they are still to work this out. “If I were them, I’d be thinking that there has to be some place to go. Maybe it’s an island,” Dave Erickson explains to THR, indicating they will be looking for a place that is untouched by the infection.

As well as learning more about the infected, Season 2 of Fear The Walking Dead will see the military still present. Many fans thought with the events of the Season 1 finale, operation Cobalt (the “human termination” of the members of the L.A. quarantine zone) would be abandoned, but Erickson says it is too early to make that assumption. And, considering the military will not want to leave a city overrun with the infected due to the fact they can continue to turn people at a rapid rate, fans can probably expect some form of operation Cobalt in Season 2.

How far will the military go in seaosn 2 of AMC's Fear The Walking Dead?

Also in Season 2 of Fear The Walking Dead, there will be a continuation on the question Dr. Bethany Exner ( played by Sandrine Holt) asked Liza in Season 1 about who she considered family. In particular, if the characters make it to Victor Strand’s (Colman Domingo) boat, how will the relationship between everyone develop in such a confined space? And if it comes down to it, what will happen “when somebody you love dearly is compromising the larger group?” For those that are yet to learn the full extent the devastation of the zombie apocalypse has brought to the world, how long will it take them to realize that sometimes tough decisions have to be made in relation to your own family now that they are living in the world of the walking dead?

Fear The Walking Dead returns to AMC for Season 2 in 2016.
