Woman Raped in Washington Park as Hundreds Watched, Nobody Intervened

washington rapist

Hours ago (Saturday, May 23) a woman in her 20′s was raped in a Washington park in front of hundreds of witnesses, and nobody stepped forward to try and stop it from happening.

Michael van Poppel, founder and editor of BreakingNews on Twitter and BNONews.com reported the incident on his Twitter page as details came in:

Wow….. a woman was raped at a Washington park and hundreds saw it but did nothing?!?

@glownz I can’t imagine someone not trying anything, out of hundreds even.. I could never just watch something like that happen

@maggieglazer Well, I could never just stand there and watch if someone like that happened…

Tried to see if anyone tweeted about the rape, since there were hundreds of people.. but I can’t find anything.

RT @nilicule: @mpoppel it’s called the Bystander Effect, http://bit.ly/JFcxh – and it’s absolutely horrible

“the greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will help.”

For more info on the ‘Bystander Effect’ read the info at the link highlighted above. You think you’re safer with a crowd of people around? Think again.

Continuing on with the twitter stream…

Strange.. I’d feel safer if there are a lot of people since I would expect they’d do something if it went wrong.. vs. being alone

Rapist in Washington was in his 60s and the victim was a young female in her 20s

Photo of the rapist, creepy guy: http://bit.ly/hX5zz

Thinking about the rape story. The KHQ reporter said the initial call was a couple doing X-rated stuff..

So, maybe it didn’t appear as a rape? I mean, I would imagine she would try to resist and call for help but.. maybe it was from a distance

@glownz I guess its possible if people witnessed it from a distance.

@ChristopherKHQ Do you know what happened? Were the witnesses close or far away?

@glownz I know.. but maybe they couldn’t see her face? I mean.. you don’t know what their view was of the entire incident..

@paige661 I know but maybe people were a distance away and that it appeared like a couple having sex and not as in a rape..

KHQ-TV says the initial call was that two people were having sex behind some bushes near a bridge

When security responded, the male was uncooperative and combative and he fought with PD when they responded

Only after talking to the witnesses and the female.. they did not believe it was consensual.. hmmm

@chiefpopeye1979 He was a panhandler. Looks like he didn’t have anything to loose.

(Note: the above stream from twitter was edited to place comments in chronological order for clarity.)

Chilling.

Michael is a journalist who monitors hundreds of news sources daily and sees incredibly disturbing things on a daily basis, and even he is shocked by the fact that a rape can take place in front of so many people, yet no-one would actually help the victim.

I’m speechless.

  1. I've seen this happen. A woman screaming at her boyfriend on Q Street, NW, in DC, he started moving the car forward, almost pinning her between it and another car, and everyone just stood there. Except me. I got involved and forced him to stop his car. A pansy-ass lawyer who lives in a townhouse right in front of the scene, would not raise a finger to help.

    People make me puke.

Well, perhaps you should have put your hand held down long enough to go help! What a pathetic society we live in!

  5. ONLY IN AMERICA the land of the FREE such things happens

  6. Seems like a load of senstionalist nonsense, really. I don't see anything to suggest that 100s of people willfully ignored a rape in progress. There's no sign that the victim was asking for help, or that there was even much of a struggle, or even that the 100s of people were within a close enough distance to see the event properly.

I've seen people doing it in the bushes in public places a few times, I'm not about to run in there and disturb them just on the offchance that it might be a rape. Nor am I going to report it to the police, I'm all for people doing it in public, the more the merrier.

Just the fact that it was called in as 'couple doing dirty stuff in public' is a pretty strong sign that it wasn't obviously non-consensual.

it's awful that a woman was raped, but you guys are making an awful lot of assumptions just to feel disgusted with your fellow citizens.

I wonder what the chances are that it *was* consensual until she realised the police had been called? It wouldn't be the first time.

  7. What a load of crap. Rape only happens in America? People don't want to get involved only in America? Bullshit, this is the single dumbest thing I've read today.

  8. rape is everywhere stop being an idiot, i'm talking about being raped while hundreds watching and doing nothing

Name a country with such a thing., you cant, ONLY IN AMERICA , many people actually fear helping because of the fucked up law system, there was many cases where people who helped got onto legal problems

You cite no sources—policemen, bystanders, the victim—provide no concrete details of the event, and immediately attribute to The Bystander Effect a rape that may not have even happened. Thanks for the rundown of the hearsay and tweets, but I'm waiting for a report from a journalist. This is gossip and unworthy of outrage, except in its pretense as news.

  10. How could anyone stand and watch something like that?

Send me some pictures of the witnesses as they watched a woman get raped. Hundreds of people? Yeah, right…. I find this story hard to believe. How could the woman not struggle to get away with so many on lookers nearby? Why would the rapist continue to rape the poor woman with so many witnesses who could identify him? And if this really did happen, I find it hard to believe that not one person stopped to intervene. I think the title to your article must be exaggerated.

  12. From the story, it sounds like the bystanders witnessed two people having sex in the bushes. Unless the woman was screaming for help, why would the bystanders do anything?

  13. That`s not true. America isn`t the only place. A little over two years ago a woman was raped in Tokyo in the space between two subway cars during rush hour, which means it was ridiculously crowded, and no one stopped it. I don`t remember if the guy got away with it or not (I think he did, but I would only place 60% confidence on that), but no one did a thing. Same thing, different day, different country.

This is just disgusting. The people who stood there and watched are just as despicable as the rapist! I also read that there were many children in the bunch. What the hell kind of parents are these? This whole story just makes me sick. It really opens your eyes to just how horrible people can be.

  16. A whole country seems to have stood by and let a huge cover-up occur. It is sad (but psychologically curious) when these things happen.

The US Government's science is based on logical fallacies and bare assertions concerning crucial aspects of the physical evidence. As their conclusions are not based on tests of crucial evidence, their research cannot be replicated and thus trusted. They claim to have done no simulations of the Twin Towers. Even their simulation of WTC7 has never been run by an independent party. Their work should not be blindly trusted–that's not the way of science.

Okay so after reading more about this, had it happened the way the title claims and some of what I read, it would have been horrible. I agree with what one commenter said, if she was being raped why the hell would she not scream for help with all of these people nearby?

  18. The 'bystander' effect that you refer to is not taken seriously by any psychologist worth their salt outside of America. The simple fact is that Americans are idiots. This wouldn't have happened anywhere else in the world.

  19. Woooow. You're in idiot. Shit's happened more than you would imagine. In some cultures people aren't even phased by it. Maybe you should avoid absolutely in your statements. Like me saying, “You're positively retarded.” If on an off chance you were actually gifted with some decent amount of brain power I'd look like a jackass.

If they were just having peaceful sex, someone would have called the cops to complain….

  21. *NEWS FLASH* There was no solid evidence to indicate it was any more than public fucking by third party accounts. The simple fact is that you are ignorant and jump to conclusions. Read a bit more.

  22. The guy didn't exactly turn himself in.

in situations when there are large groups of people witnessing a crime, nobody intervenes because they expect other people to control the situation. Puerto Rico day 2000, anyone? and how about the woman who was raped in the NYC subway while subway staffers watched in their security screens? people are just chicken-shit.

  24. This should be pulled. The details are 2nd and 3rd hand at best. The title is blatant shit, “Nobody Intervened.” ZOMG. Also, nobody fucking knew. The cops were called because someone peaked into the BUSHES and saw them? So the real story is that a guy was having sex with a girl in the bushes, allegedly raping her, those that did see them figured it was indecent public sex, and then it was reported as alleged rape.
Doesn't sound quite as exciting, I know. But it has the benefit of being more accurate a description now doesn't it?

  25. Bystandereffect. Always has and will always be. You might like to think you'd behave differently, but you wouldn't.

Sounds like you have never read a Psychology book. It is a universal effect, that here in Europe is also widely taught in our universities.

  27. Oh darn. Here we thought we saw an opportunity to attack America out of jealous hypocrisy, and you had to go spoil our fun by spreading knowledge of the “Bystander Effect.”

Karma's a bitch – may somebody enlighten you as well!

  28. This is just tripe anti-American bullcrap. In any number of Middle East countries, not only would nobody interfere, but later they would say she was the perpetrator and stone/whip her to death. Get over yourself.

  29. bullshit!!!!!!!!!! im no1 special but i promise on my mother i would have interviened. cant believe others wouldnt!!!! i dont know where u grew up where i did we knew the diff between right and wrong and like i said im no1 special but id bet my balls people woulda set things straight if that happened here. shame on u

  30. guns, knives, human rights… it used to be people would want to get involved. now, if you get involved, someone will pull a gun on you, or a knife, or human rights will come in and take YOU away and suddenly you are the bad person and the bad person is the victim… go figure

  31. Things like this can happen in China too. You think you are smart, but in fact you have a very limited set of knowledge due to your world being so small. Bottom line, you are ignorant, and it is likely you will remain that way for the remainder of your miserable life.

  32. Guess what … just yesterday I was in Jamison Park in Portland OR and a bike thief took off with a lady's bike and she started to yell and just about everyone in the vacinity started to move and to help. Yelling from many people and being chased by 5-6 people did not find success but at least we all tried.

Seen it in action before … it only takes one person to start and question the action and then everyone else will wake up. But I guess that one person won't not be you. And I guess Portland is not NYC.

    Glad I live in Portland.

  33. That's not the reason. Take a psych 101 class. Please don't get involved because they assume that someone else will help or call 911. Hence, the bigger the crowd, the less likely anyone is to help. Its called deindividuation.

  34. Amen, this is pathetic. An article of tweets. Paul Short has absolutely no journalistic integrity, even for such a sensitive issue. Write a paragraph for once.

That's why you carry a gun. Doing right means being willing to give all. Shit or get off the pot.

Evil will slink into the shadows if good people act with unlimited escalation. If one is truly good, their entire existence is predicated on war and they never find peace in this life anyway.

Don't think: Someone will call the somebody.

Don't watch: Everyone is watching too.

Just do: The same instant your gut tells you wrong is being done to another.

  36. I HAVE intervened. So you, Carl, can blanket generalize and use psychobabble to to so – but I have stopped an attack when I saw it. I guess that makes me one in a million? I saw a large man who'd been getting gas grab a small female clerk at a gas station and start dragging her behind the building. I jumped out of my car and ran towards them. The man ran, got into his car. I am a woman and I scared him away. Perhaps the crowd was full of sheeple, but I am not one of them.

  37. No, dillweed. He has it right. Take a psych 101 class. I don't get involved because I'm not going to risk my neck for some chick to not uh, get raped? It's not like she's dying. I don't want to deal with police “oh you shouldn't have hit him, now he's gonna sue you”

    Welcome to America.

  38. Listen to you! THA'TS WHY YOU CARRY A GUN. Yeah man, I'm going to a birth day party, and I'll just bring my fscking magnum. You are ridiculous. You give rights to people that are too stupid to use them correctly. You and your bullsht freedom are what's costing people their lives.

  39. No, dillweed. ajh is right. Psychology (more specifically sociology) has a specific phrase for this exact situation. People in large groups are less likely to stand up for something. Everyone thinks that someone else will take care of it in just another second. With everyone thinking this, no action is taken. Vael, read the article, not just the comments.

    Welcome to NY

  40. “It's not like she's dying”?
Wow, dude. You're a complete piece of shit, you know that?

  41. I work for 911, I hear the excuse, “I don't want to get involved!” all the damn time. They'll call from a payphone, annoymously and refuse to give any info because they fear having to testify.
