As Trevor Noah prepares for his first appearance as the host of The Daily Show on Monday, the comedian has received a special new award. He has been announced South African of the Year for 2015 in an online poll.
Trevor Noah is about to start his new career as host of The Daily Show, following in the footsteps of Jon Stewart, who recently retired from the show. However, before he even got started, Noah has become the first recipient of the South African of the Year award for 2015.
According to the official website for the South African of the Year Award, the results were compiled from votes by fans on the social media platform Twitter, after four South Africans were put forward as possible candidates.
Noah was in fine company with South African cricketer AB de Villiers, sprinter Wayde van Niekerk and Team MTN-Qhubeka, the first South African and African cycling team to ever compete in the Tour de France.
However, it was Trevor Noah who came tops in the voting on September 21 by a narrow lead.

Jan Braai, the man behind the South African of the Year project, explained the award.
“The South African of the Year is someone who with a single phenomenal achievement made you extremely proud of being South African.
“Our intention is to highlight exceptional performances by South Africans that for a brief moment in time brought the country to a standstill, those special moments where the hearts of the nation beat together united in pride.”
While Trevor Noah is already a household name in South Africa for his comedy performances, it was most likely his upcoming new job as the host of The Daily Show that tipped him to the top, with Braai saying his “sensational achievement embodies the spirit of the greatest nation on earth.”
“We can achieve great things in South Africa, Trevor is leading the way, raising our spirits and showing that anything is possible.”
In the meantime, Trevor Noah has outlined his first guests on The Daily Show, opening Monday, September 28 and it is an interesting mix.
Monday sees him interviewing actor and comedian Kevin Hart, who is looking forward to appearing on the show.
