Is Taylor Swift, Unlike Rihanna, Trying Too Hard To Be Liked?

Taylor Swift is one of the biggest superstars to ever hit the music scene. However, there has been a backlash brewing, and part of it is because many of Taylor Swift’s critics think she is fake. Perhaps Swift is trying too hard to be liked. Just as bad publicity surrounds her, she always releases some sort of statement, picture, or video of herself doing something likeable.

Taylor Swift was ridiculously accused of promoting colonialism with her video for “Wildest Dreams.” The Huffington Post was the first source to go on the attack.

“Instead of the cultural appropriation that has become almost status quo in today’s pop music, Swift has opted for the bolder option of actually just embodying the political exploitation of a region and its people. It’s brave, really.”

As many people have noticed, we have seen Taylor Swift suddenly hang out with many African Americans during the past couple weeks. Perhaps to show that she’s “cool with the Blacks,” Swift posted a picture of herself hanging out with American Idol contestant Todrick Hall. The comments after an article on the topic by Entertainment Weekly are quite interesting.

“Taylor is so transparent. She now wants to prove that she is ‘cool with the Blacks’ by hanging out with Todrick Hall and even calling him her new best friend. It is so transparent,” writes Proud Gay Millennial.

“Taylor you don’t have to try so hard to prove your down with the blacks. This picture screems [sic] of desperation,” comments Eric Porter.

Taylor Swift also made news by posting a video of herself dancing with a 7-year-old fan, according to Entertainment Tonight. You would think that people would praise this, but many are accusing Ms. Swift of initiating another publicity stunt. One commenter said what others were thinking after an article on E! Online about the same topic.

“If Taylor Swift cares so much about her fans, why does she have to post videos of herself with them? Couldn’t she just have danced with him and not released a video for PR purposes?” writes Goldberg1Chad.

Taylor Swift is certainly different from Rihanna, who remains unapologetic, no matter how much people criticize her. For example, there was a lot of controversy over the video for “Bit*h Better Have My Money,” but Rihanna never apologized for it. Swift may want to take some lessons from Rihanna. Taylor is still America’s sweetheart, but that’s not going to last long if she keeps on trying so hard.
