Kim Kardashian Opens Up About Her Struggles Over Caitlyn Jenner’s Transformation And How She Kept It A Secret For 13 Years

On her official site, KimKardashianWest.com, Kim Kardashian posted an emotional blog essay, revealing her initial struggles over Caitlyn Jenner’s decade-long transition.

In Kim Kardashian’s blog post, entitled “About Caitlyn,” the 34-year-old expectant mom revealed that 13-years-ago, she walked in on Caitlyn (known as Bruce at the time) dressed up as a woman after coming home from a friend’s house.

“I came home from a friend’s house and walked into the garage and Bruce was there, dressed up as a woman. Heels, wig, makeup and all! I don’t remember specifically what he had on because I put my head down and ran into my bedroom. Had I not overheard my dad and his friends discussing rumors that Bruce would dress up as a woman years before (when I was about 11 years old), I never would have believed what I was seeing. I thought my dad was jealous of my mom’s new husband, that he was joking with his friends on the phone, but suddenly I knew it was all true.”

After the awkward encounter, Kim said in the essay that she slipped away from the house and drove to Kourtney’s house. Kardashian recounted how she called her sister, crying, and asking her if she could stay the whole weekend at her place.

“You have no idea what I walked in on with Bruce,” Kim told her sister at the time. Kourtney said: “Did you catch him cheating on Mom?” Kim said, “No, I wish.”

Since then, the two Kardashian sisters did some extensive research. Kim admitted in the essay that she and Kourtney didn’t even know what the term “transgender” meant. Kim recounted how they Googled episodes of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to find out the reasons on why their stepfather was dressing as a woman. And since information about transgendered people was scarce at the time, Kim and Kourtney Kardashian thought of Caitlyn as a crossdresser, not as a transgender, for over a decade.

Caitlyn then called Kim Kardashian on the phone and said that she’s dealing with a “deeper issue.” She asked Kim to not tell anyone, and said that they would one day talk about it.

For over a decade, Kim and Kourtney didn’t tell anyone — not even their mom — fearing that it would break up their family. Kim Kardashian said that she just “literally tuned it out for over a decade and never even really thought about it.”

Until nine years later, when Caitlyn called Kim on the phone and asked her if they can talk about it — as promised.

“I happily met with him at my home and he explained to me that he always felt he was trapped in the wrong body,” recounts Kim Kardashian. “He said he was going to therapy and had dealt with it.”

Kim Kardashian added that she couldn’t have foreseen that Bruce would transition into Caitlyn, even after that momentous meeting.

“I walked away from this talk maybe understanding Bruce a little bit better as to why he did a lot of solo sports and spent a lot of time alone, because he didn’t really connect with many people – but I never walked away thinking he was a different gender. Maybe it wasn’t explained well enough to me or maybe Bruce still wasn’t sure and didn’t know how to communicate what he felt. We went another half decade living life as usual.”

Kim Kardashian then recounted how the relationship between Bruce and her mom “started to unravel” around the time when the Olympian moved out of the house to live in Malibu.

Kim also said that seeing Jenner live as “her authentic self” was such a “huge weight” off her shoulders, although she admits that “the kids were all nervous about how our dad would be perceived and that’s a normal feeling.”

According to Kim Kardashian, her relationship with Caitlyn has never been better.

“This person has been my stepdad for half my life. But life is just about being happy—that’s the one common denominator that everyone can understand. If you aren’t able to be you, who can you be? I’m just so proud of Caitlyn, and our relationship is even stronger now. And, after all, she asks me for style and glam tips all the time. What’s more fun than that?”
