Janet Jackson’s New ‘Unbreakable’ Single Falls Off iTunes After Just One Day

The title of Janet Jackson’s new single is “Unbreakable,” but according to iTunes charts, it could be false advertising. Released with a lot of hype, “Unbreakable” climbed up to the lower regions of iTunes on Friday and has sharply dropped. It will likely fall completely off the chart by Saturday evening. “Unbreakable” has received some good reviews.

Entertainment Weekly describes the song as “powerful,” and Mike Wass of Idolator also likes the song.

“‘Unbreakable’ is a mellow Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis production that wouldn’t sound out of place on any of the pop icon’s classic ’90s albums.”

Wass goes on to note that “Unbreakable” is a love letter to Janet Jackson’s fans, family, and husband for supporting her throughout the years despite her mistakes. Fans in the comments section of the article also really seem to like the song.

“I’m here for this. I think it’s groovy, funky and retro in all the right ways,” says Daniel Ruth.

“Classic! Feels like she’s finally making an album for her rather than trying to please radio. Loving her return,” says Sean Massich.

The responses on Twitter have been mostly positive.

It’s still too early to call “Unbreakable” a flop, especially since it was released just one day ago. However, Janet’s previous single “No Sleeep,” despite being one of the most hyped new singles in years, failed to take off, only peaking on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 67 for a week, then instantly dropping off. The song did make an impact on Billboard‘s Adult R&B chart, which — unfortunately — doesn’t have a huge impact when it comes to audience impressions or sales.

Janet Jackson is clearly loved by her die-hard fans, but could be facing the same problems as Mariah Carey and Madonna — ageism. Madonna spoke about this issue to Rolling Stone when it was claimed the BBC banned her much-acclaimed single “Living for Love” on their top station due to her age.

“I was like, ‘Wait a second. Shouldn’t it have to do with whether you wrote a good, catchy pop song?'”

Madonna should feel lucky. Despite her age, she has scored a top-ten single, “Gimme All Your Lovin,” as recent as 2012, when she was 53 years old. Janet Jackson, however, hasn’t had a top-ten hit since “Someone To Call My Lover” in 2001. However, both Madonna and Janet Jackson still sell concert tickets, and at this stage of their career, that is what is most important.
