‘Paper Towns’ Prom Scene Was More Than Just An Epic Dance Sequence, It Was A First For Two Of The Stars

Paper Towns, adapted from the John Green novel that bears the same name, opened in theater’s this past weekend.

As a gift to fans, the movie’s ending was extended, allowing fans to witness something the book did not reveal, giving everyone that viewed the movie the first opportunity to see what happened immediately after the book ended. The prom scene, which has been described as “epic” was not only a first for fans, but for the stars of the movie as well.

Critics were wary about the potential success for paper towns as it rode the popularity of The Fault in Our Stars, as reported by the Guardian. The critics felt as though fans would expect the same emotional journey that was felt in The Fault in Our Stars, despite both being completely different stories. However, the Guardian’s Cara Erica changed her mind as she watched Paper Towns and realized that it was still an emotional ride.

“Throughout Paper Towns I felt shrouded in a vague level of optimism, because as a coming of age novel there seemed so much hope for the future of these characters. Yet, in both TFIOS and Paper Towns, John Green seems to have waged war on happy endings… cleverly written Paper Towns had me in both tears and hysterics!”

John Green’s ability to foster emotion in his writing is perfect for translation to the big screen. However, there is one portion of the movie that did not come from the book, the prom scene at the end.

According to MTV, the “epic” prom scene was a special extended ending that was unique to the movie. In addition to being a first for the fans, it was also a first for the actors. While Nat Wolff’s prom was happening, he was auditioning for The Fault in Our Stars, so he had to miss his prom. Hlaston Sage went to an all girl’s school, thus she did not have the opportunity for a prom, according to Jake Schreier.

“That was a great day on set,” director Jake Schreier told MTV News. “I think Nat [Wolff] actually missed his prom because he was auditioning for ‘The Fault in Our Stars.’ And Halston [Sage] went to an all-girls’ school. So this was their prom in a lot of ways.”

Cara Delevingne was not able to attend the prom due to the timing of the shoot.
