Smashing Pumpkins’ Original Drummer To Join ‘Plot End Times’ Tour

Smashing Pumpkins will be on the Plot End Times tour with Marilyn Manson, and the band’s frontman, Billy Corgan, is happy to announce that fans will be seeing a familiar face.

Corgan said that Smashing Pumpkins’ original drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin, will be rejoining the band for the tour. Chamberlin was kicked out of the band in 1996 after he and the Smashing Pumpkins’ touring keyboardist, Jonathan Melvoin, overdosed on heroin. Melvoin died, but Chamberlin was lucky to make it out alive, and the band decided to kick him out as they were concerned about his health and wanted to protect him.

In 1998, Billy Corgan reinstated Chamberlin as the drummer and went on a farewell tour in 2000. Again, in 2009, Corgan and Chamberlin worked together under the name Smashing Pumpkins, but without the other original members. Chamberlin eventually quit the Smashing Pumpkins in 2009.

Now, Corgan is happy to announce that Chamberlin will be back with the rest of the Smashing Pumpkins. He described what fans can expect from the Plot End Times tour.

“Heavy on the classics, heavy on the rock, and heavy on the attitude.”

Corgan also explained that each concert will last about an hour and 20 minutes, and will be an intense experience for concertgoers, as reported by USA Today.

“It’s like punch to the head, punch to the head, punch to the head, thank you very much.”

Chamberlin was not the first choice for the Smashing Pumpkins tour. However, a deal with a drummer didn’t push through, and Chamberlin was the next best choice.

“You can’t just grab somebody and say, ‘Play drums on this Smashing Pumpkins song.’ Jimmy’s drum parts are so incredibly technical and nuanced that It’s a very rare class of people that can step in and play.”

Jimmy Chamberlin was happy to accept the offer when Corgan called him up.

“It’s a great opportunity not only to celebrate the music, but to celebrate the friendship and the legacy.”
