Swimmer Annie Chandler Proposed to on Medal Podium [Video]

Team USA swimmer Annie Chandler got more than she bargained for after she hung a medal around the neck of boyfriend Matt Grevers for his win in the 100-meter backstroke at Saturday’s Missouri Grand Prix.

Less than a minute after giving her beau a congratulatory kiss, the Olympic 2012 hopeful found herself being proposed to by Grevers – on the gold medal stand!

The surprise proposal was carried out by Grevers after the silver and bronze medalists had left the podium. In the footage (which you can watch below), Grevers is seen waiting for the other medalists to leave before summoning Chandler to him. As she joins him on the medal stand, he drops to one knee before producing a ring and popping the question. The shock on Chandler’s face looks very genuine.

Grevers, who won two gold medals in the 2008 Olympics, was assisted by his brother Andy, who subtly slipped his brother the diamond engagement ring before the champion swimmer took the stand.

Both Chandler and Grevers expect to swim at the London Olympics this year. The couple have been dating for four years, and the the 26-year-old Grevers relocated to Arizona to be close to Chandler, 24. She told the Associated Press:

“The only part that felt unnatural was when Matt asked me to get on the top (medalists’) podium with him. When he fell to his knee and I saw the shiny black box, I knew. That’s when I went weak in the knees and kind of fell down myself.”

Below is the video of the ninja proposal. Happy Valentine’s Day, everybody:
