The ‘Minions’ Trailer Is Out, And It Is Awesome

The Minions – those goggle-wearing, enthusiastic little guys from the Despicable Me franchise who live only to serve despicable masters and supervillains – have been around since the beginning of time; that is, if the trailer for their new movie, Minions, is to be believed.

Universal dropped the trailer for Minions today, and it looks like fans of the Despicable Me franchise are in for another treat.

The trailer reveals that the Minions, who speak a language that sounds vaguely like English but is mostly gibberish voiced by actor and co-director Peter Coffin, according to Christian Science Monitor, have been around since life began. The Minions record time as B.G. and A.G. – Before Gru and After Gru. In their B.G. days, in their enthusiastic quest to serve despicable masters, they inadvertently caused a few deaths; the dinosaurs, Napoleon, Dracula, that kind of thing, as well as toppling the Pyramids.

The Minions story will focus on three Minions, according to Entertainment Weekly: Kevin, Stuart, and Bob. Listless and depressed without a master, the three main Minions head across the sea looking for the ultimate despicable master. They arrive in New York in the year 42 B.G. – 1968 to you and me.

In the original two Despicable Me films, the Minions serve Gru, voiced by Steve Carrell, and are secondary characters who provide comic relief. In Despicable Me, released in 2010, Gru is an evil villain bent on world domination. He adopts three orphaned girls – voiced by Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, and Elsie Fisher – as part of an evil plan, but eventually falls in love with the girls and abandons his life of evil. In Despicable Me 2, released in 2013, Gru gets recruited to work in the Anti-Villain League.

Both films were box-office smashes; Despicable Me scored 72 out of 100 on the movie review website Metacritic; while Despicable Me 2 scored 62. The franchise has also inspired an attraction at Universal Studios theme parks in Florida and California.

Not much is known, as of this post, about the plot of Minions once the lads reach New York. However, Deadline reports that Sandra Bullock will play super villainness Scarlet Overkill, and Jon Hamm will play her husband, inventor Herb Overkill. Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, and Steve Coogan will round out the main cast.

Minions hits theaters in July 2015.
