Jay Leno Is Returning To TV, But He Won’t Be Telling Jokes

Jay Leno has been very quiet since he hosted his last episode of The Tonight Show last February, but it looks like his hiatus from TV is about to end. Leno, 64, is reportedly returning to TV as a host of primetime show that apparently won’t involve comedy. Not to say he won’t throw out a few one-liners, but this time he’ll be hosting a show that focuses on something he’s really passionate about — cars.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Leno is “close” to signing a deal to host a brand-new show on CNBC, one that will be all about his love of cars. Instead of doing stand up comedy and interviewing celebs on a late night talk show, his new show will be auto-related. This seems like the perfect fit for Jay, considering he owns hundreds of cars and reportedly spends most weekends working with mechanics to restore vintage vehicles.

Will Leno’s upcoming show feature the TV hosts talking to celebrities about their car collections or will the show focus on his own airplane hangar full of automobiles? Very little has leaked out about the show, with CNBC only confirming that “it will not be comedy-based.” The New York Times reports that negotiations are underway but even their sources could not reveal anything about the show because Leno still hasn’t signed a contract.

Car enthusiasts who have watched Leno on the NBC.com online show, Jay Leno’s Garage, know first-hand that cars are his passion. The show’s site is chock full of photos and videos about his massive car collection as well as information about just about any vehicle that sparks Jay’s interest.

The Hollywood Reporter states that several networks have been trying to get Jay Leno back on TV, including CNN and A&E, but it looks like CNBC won out, likely due to his success with Jay Leno’s Garage being hosted on NBC.com and his positive relationship with the network’s president, Mark Hoffman.

During Labor Day weekend this past September, CNBC aired a special made-for-TV edition of his online show called Jay’s Garage: The Ultimate Car Week. Whether that’s a hint of what’s to come is still unknown but for fans of Leno and his love of cars, it will be good to have him back on television.
