It’s The Cats’ House, He Just Lives There: Man Spends 15 Years Turning Home Into Cat House

The internet loves cats — that much is well known. But do you love cats so much that you would spend more than 15 years renovating your house to turn it into the ultimate cat playground?

That’s what Greg Krueger of St. James, Minnesota, has done, and he says he couldn’t be happier about it.

“I don’t feel like I live alone, even though I’m the only person living here,” says Krueger of his home with four cats. “We’re like a family.”

Over the past decade-and-a-half, Krueger has meticulously constructed more than 100 yards of, yes, catwalks throughout his home — as shown in the video above from WCCO-TV in Minnesota — and he says he couldn’t be happier about it.

“I just love trails and paths, and cats, of course,” Krueger told he TV station. “And so I’ve just linked those passions together.”

To be honest, his ongoing project is not only for the benefit of his cats. Creating the fun house for cats also serves as a form of therapy for Krueger, who was diagnosed with a mild form of autism known as Asperger’s Syndrome when he was 49 years old.

“Cause I have Asperger’s Syndrome I’m probably not the best at socializing,” Krueger says, be he adds that he has come to view his condition as a good thing, because it allows him the focus to construct his elaborate cat maze.

“Obviously, my house would not be like this if I didn’t have Asperger’s,” Krueger said. “If it takes a long time, I don’t care because if I like what I’m doing, I almost don’t want to finish what I’m doing.”

And indeed, he is not finished. He plans more catwalks and mazes for his beloved companions.

“I think about it constantly, I can’t fall asleep. I’m still thinking about it, thinking about the design. I wake up, I’m thinking about it. I’m thinking about it all day at work,” he said.

Kruger believes that his Asperger’s is what creates his close bond with his cats.

“It’s been said that all cats have Asperger’s Syndrome. So I think that might be one reason why I really love cats is that I kind of think that I can understand their personality really well,” Krueger said from inside his cat house.
