‘Star Wars Rebels’ Gets Release Date

Star Wars Rebels, the highly anticipated animated series that marks the debut of Disney’s ownership of the franchise, is set to arrive next month, opening a previously unseen chapter in the Star Wars saga.

Rebels will debut with a special one-hour event on Disney channels, IGN reports. Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion will kick off the series on October 3rd, though fans who are verified users of WATCHDisneyXD.com and the WATCH Disney XD app will be able to access the premiere even earlier, on September 29th. Beginning on Monday, October 13th, Rebels will air in its normal 9:00pm timeslot on Disney XD, in 34 languages. According to Disney, Star Wars Rebels will reach over 400 million households in 163 different countries.

The new series is set five years before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, and will recount the formation of the Rebel Alliance, which will eventually include Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker among their ranks. During Rebels, however, the organization is composed of a ragtag band of aliens and a Jedi knight in hiding, voiced by actor Freddie Prinze Jr.

Executive producer Simon Kinberg described the series as “the origin story of the Rebel Alliance” at San Diego Comic-Con, according to Hero Complex. “They’re rebels who don’t imagine they’ll be part of a larger organization one day,” he said, comparing the series to stories of the American Revolution. Rebels is overseen by Dave Filoni, who is well known in Star Wars fan circles for his work on the previous animated series The Clone Wars.

While Rebels is an animated series, it is also believed to pay a larger role in Disney’s burgeoning Star Wars universe as The Iquisitr has noted. The first project to be released since the company purchased the franchise, Rebels is thought by fans to be groundwork for future installments. The main villain of Rebels is The Inquisitor, part of a Force-sensitive race of Jedi hunters who are rumored to play a major part in Star Wars Episode VII, which is currently filming.

For fans who don’t subscribe to Disney, Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion will arrive on DVD on October 14.
