Can we please STFU about Twitter

twitter

Look – I realize that Twitter is slightly interesting to talk about but is the technology landscape so frikken boring that this inane service is all that we can talk about. With every refresh of my feed reader this past week talk about Twitter; or some stupid ass third party leech, is the main topic of conversation. It’s not just the blogs either – it’s also infecting FriendFeed and of course Twitter itself.

I thought the flood of reminiscence of the year gone by and the inevitable prognostication of the year to come would be boring as hell but damn – I got to the point that they were something to look forward. You know, Om Malik wrote a great post about mediocrity to end of 2008. The only thing missing in the post however was any references to blogging; and I gotta tell ya if all we can talk about is Twitter then we are in serious frikken trouble.

I know that we like to expound non-stop sometimes on various subjects but it seems that once you enter the world of social media everything else other than Twitter isn’t important. It is absolutely amazing that a silly ass communication service with no business plan as of yet has reduced otherwise intelligent people to nothing more than repeater stations for the same old crap.

After all just how many times can you analysis the same old nonsense? It’s not like there is anything new happening with the service. It’s not like it has changed the world anymore since the last disaster. Gawd give me a good old bitchmeme already instead of more Twitter crap. Come on Robert please put your foot in your mouth and save us from boring mediocrity for at least a couple of days.

Surely our lives aren’t that boring that the only thing we can talk about is Twitter. I know I’ve had enough and you won’t be hearing anymore from me about it for at least the rest of the week.

How about you?

No kidding. There's no quicker way to drive me away from a website than to see more talk about Twitter.../yawn.

    Twitter Fanbois need to die...

    G-Man
  • well I don't know about dying :)
  • Thank you for this post - I like Twitter and I use it every day - but If I see another mundane blog post about Twitter I will vomit.
  • If you are bored with talk about twitter now then you are in for a rude awakening, because IMHO it's just getting started. Twitter or something like Twitter is going to replace email as the dominant form communication mechanism on the web. I actually think twitter will really get going when it figures out how to approach the enterprise, this is where the real money is and where the real communication problems are.
  • if it lasts long enough - at some point VC money is going to come to a screeching halt for it. then all the talking about it in the world won't matter.
  • Steve...When did you start writing for the "Q" ??? lol,I understand completely though. Hopefully Microsoft and/or Apple will mess something up this weekend so we can write about that instead...
  • been writing for Duncan since October I believe (and lovin' it)
  • Yeah, you do have a point. Twitter is not the only thing happening in social media, and how many times can we talk about what it does.

I use twitter regularly myself, but I think it's a bit delusional to think it is going to replace email as the #1 communication on the web. It's a great tool, but certainly not the end all of communication.
  • I use Twitter all the time as well but jeezz we gotta have more to talk about in technology than just that. Talk about boring if that is the case.
  • Twitter is pretty cool conceptually. One could pontificate, conjecture, and ponder what affects it may have on the future for an eternity. Some interesting things have happened surrounding Twitter, but I definitely agree that we talk about it entirely too much.
  • even conceptually Rahsheen it is nothing new. IRC (or chatting) has been around for longer than the Internet. Just because some-one was clever enough to stick a bunch of pastel colours on a page with a box that asked "what are you doing" doesn't make it an society changing event like the Twitter pontificators like to make out.
  • True, but I'm factoring in that most "normal" people haven't ever used IRC that they're aware and Twitter/IM is the closest they've come to that type of communication. Definitely not new, but interesting to a lot of people who haven't been around the block yet :)
  • The reason people talk about Twitter so much right now is that there are a handful of new services and extensions that debut for it each and every day, so there's no shortage of things to talk about. Sure, the main Twitter service itself hasn't changed much in the last month or two, but the constantly evolving ways that people use Twitter, as well as the ongoing debate about the power and value of Twitter (such as this post) ensure that there are plenty of new/interesting/unique conversations to have about the service that don't just involve "repeater stations" trading quips back and forth.
  • The power and value of Twitter could change tomorrow but the fact is that nothing about it has changed enough to warrant this kind of verbal barrage we get on a non-stop basis. Even the related services built around Twitter are usually just repeats of some other so-called bright idea. Just look at the bullshit discussions that happened around the idea of authority and ranking with a Twitter search.
  • Someone BLOGGED: "...if all we can talk about is Twitter then we are in serious frikken trouble."

Heck, I didn't know you spelled it "frikken." Talk about mediocrity in blogging, some of us can't even spell swear words correctly. LOLz BTW, agree with those who think Twitter (or something like it) is the vanguard of a fundamental shift in electronic communications. IRC, IM, chat, and their long histories notwithstanding, this is more poised for mainstream adoption because you don't have to be tethered to a computer to use it.

  • yer makin' fun of a way I spell a "made up" swear word? Wow ... way to go bucko
  • You're taking my comment way too seriously. I think -- there is a "LOL" following it. The thing is: you're complaining about all the talk about Twitter... by talking about Twitter. Unless you have some kind of tongue-in-cheek invisible inside joke vibe going on, that seems kind of disingenuous and, well, "frikken" dumbassed to me, bucko. flame on.

  • my apologies - I missed the smiley and as I said somewhere else I totally get the irony of the post
  • Fair enough. Perhaps a post about people jumping into the middle of threads, and reiterating points already made, is merited. Just kidding.
  • He's got a point, let's talk about FRIENDFEED!
  • let's not and say we did .. will save a lot of aggravation
  • That would be lying.
  • as it turns out by today's activities in the blogosphere you could be right LOL

The increased blog posts + the increased followers + these mainstream uses of it...think it's just a sign of 2009 being a big year for the service. I just look at it as a signal of what's happening out there. I head over to Winextra to get de-Twittered. ;-)
