Lea Michele Poured Her Heart And Soul Into ‘Louder’

Lea Michele wants her fans to know that she meant every word she sang on Louder.

The Glee star released her debut album in February, a record that contains plenty of emotional tunes. Although Michele has already tackled the world of television and Broadway, she’s hoping this record will turn her into a full-blown pop star.

Lea Michele discussed her heartfelt endeavor during a recent chat with the Los Angeles Times. According to the singer, the poured every ounce of heart and soul she had into crafting Louder. In short: She didn’t fake a single emotion while putting together her first batch of songs.

“I didn’t record one word I didn’t feel — whether or not I wrote it. These are words that are parts of me,” Michele recently explained.

After putting the album on hold to mourn the loss of boyfriend and fellow Glee star Cory Monteith, she decided to head back into the studio with an arsenal of new material. Pouring these emotions into her work helped the actress with the grieving process.

“Now that I had this experience happen to me… we decided to write about it. We decided that’s what felt organic.”

Lea Michele admitted that recording a song about the death of Cory Monteith was an incredibly difficult experience. During a recent interview with Billboard, Michele said putting together the track was both “therapeutic and difficult.”

“It will always represent the most devastating thing that’s every happened to me in my whole life. But at the same time, music is therapy,” Lea said.

The actress added, “It’s been therapy for me in the entire grieving process and in my entire life. I’m grateful that Sia collaborated on that song with me and it’s a moment in my life… music has just been so important and so helpful to me this whole year.”

While her fans have certainly enjoyed the music, Lea Michele seems to have divided critics. While some outlets believe Louder is a quality pop album, others weren’t quite as smitten with the endeavor.

“Her attempt at breaking out as a solo artist has been rocky — lead single ‘Cannonball’ sank like one — and this album of insta-dated EDM-pop anthems and half-cocked bass drops probably won’t help her cause,” Rolling Stone critic Christopher Weingarten explained in his review of the record.

The folks at Billboard weren’t nearly as critical. Reviewer Mike Ayers explained, “Lyrically, ‘Louder’ is rather one-sided, as she often sings about the perils of relationships, over and over, in ways that we’ve all heard many times at this point. Still, it’s a solid effort that shows she has promise as a bona fide pop artist. Next time, hopefully, she’ll dig deeper into the Lea soul.”
