Pink had the difficult task of being the one to sing Somewhere Over The Rainbow at the 2014 Oscars to celebrate the 75 year anniversary of the beloved Wizard of Oz. Her performance of the popular song was just one of a great night of music at the 2014 Oscars.
Pink, known for her recent high flying acrobatics at awards shows, chose a much more scaled down, tasteful, and moving rendition of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Considering she was up against Pharrell Williams and his catchy tune Happy and Idina Menzel and her powerful, Disney classic Let It Go, Pink shined in her ruby red dress. As she sang the powerful ballad, clips from Judy Garland’s most notable role played in a video on the screen.
Pink is no stranger to wowing crowds at awards shows. Her performance at the Grammys the last two years have caused critics to applaud her showmanship and vocal prowess. It could be argued that Pink again stole the show, even with all the other musical guests Sunday night at the Oscars.
Whoopi Goldberg was responsible for introducing the Wizard of Oz tribute piece and set the stage beautifully. Sporting some high heeled ruby red shoes, Whoopi took the crowd back to the first time they ever heard Somewhere Over The Rainbow. And in a fantastic transition, Pink began to sing the famous song as a hush fell over the star studded audience. Judy Garland’s children, Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft and Joey Luft, were all in attendance for Pink to perform the song made famous by their mother.
Though The Wizard of Oz lost out on a Best Picture Oscar to Gone With The Wind, it has stood the test of time. In 1956, the movie began to show on television regularly and eventually became a yearly staple. Somewhere Over The Rainbow is one of the most widely covered songs of all time and every performance is expected to come under great scrutiny. It takes a special talent to pull the song off in a way that pleases critics.
Pink seems to have taken Somewhere Over The Rainbow and made it her own at the 2014 Oscars. What did you think of the performance?
