Gabrielle Union: I Didn’t Realize Dwyane Wade Was Serious About Marriage

Gabrielle Union had no idea that Dwyane Wade was planning an elaborate proposal when she joined him and his two sons for brunch back in December.

The actress has been dating the Miami Heat guard for some time, but said she didn’t realize before that he was serious about getting married. His kids had already asked several times before if she would be their stepmother, but until then Dwyane hadn’t broached the topic.

That made the elaborate proposal that much more of a surprise, she said.

“I was completely surprised, him and the boys planned it completely as a family,” Gabrielle Union told Live! With Kelly and Michael. “We were just going to spend the day together, have a little bit of quality time…. I’m completely clueless. (Dwyane’s) like, ‘Do you want to do any make-up?’ I’m like, ‘No.’ So my nails aren’t done. We were literally going from (brunch) to our house, that is under construction, so I’m dressed to go to a construction site, not for anything exciting.”

It was then that Dwyane and the boys put their plan into action, she said. They took a tour of the house, and afterward Dwyane said the boys had a presentation planned.

She thought maybe they had a song, but when she turned around Gabrielle saw them holding signs that read “Will you marry us?”

“I was like, ‘Aww,’ but the thing is they ask me all the time. So I was like, ‘This is embarrassing, now they’ve made signs.’ I turned to (Dwyane) and he’s down on one knee and he’s like, ‘Will you marry us?’ and I’m like, ‘Oh, you’re serious,’ and I’m like, ‘Of course,’ but the kids couldn’t hear me and they think I’m saying no… and I’m like, ‘No, no, yes,’ and they tear up the stairs (to congratulate us).”

There was actually a lot more planning involved. Wade started looking for a ring in October, working with Gabrielle’s jeweler to come up with the perfect one.

Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade have yet to announce a wedding date.
