Ed Sheeran Was Drunk When He Received ‘Desolation Of Smaug’ Offer

Ed Sheeran was pretty drunk when he received an offer to appear on the soundtrack for Peter Jackon’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

The singer recorded the tune “I See Fire” for the second installment of Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy. Although the song appears on the soundtrack for the flick, Sheeran admitted that he was quite intoxicated and almost missed out on the invitation.

“I was off my face drunk. There was a lot of champagne and champagne gets me drunk quite quickly. I looked at my email. It was like a dream. I didn’t process it. So then I put my phone away and continued partying,” he explained to the Daily Star.

Ed Sheeran previously told the Press Association that he was at a wedding in Ibiza when the offer originally arrived on his phone. Although he couldn’t properly “process” everything at the time, everything eventually came together when he sobered up the next morning.

Since the singer generally writes his songs from personal experience, Sheeran said he writing “I See Fire” was a bit of a challenge. However, the talented songwriter was apparently ready and willing to accept the mission Jackson had given him.

“I instantly wrote the song off my reaction from watching the film. I didn’t really know how to approach it, Peter Jackson said he wanted a folk song so I was trying to go in that direction but I am mostly known for songs that wouldn’t fit in a ‘Hobbit’ film,” Ed Sheeran explained.

He added, “Every single song I have written has come from a personal experience and I’m not a dwarf yet so writing a song from a dwarf perspective in a land of dragons and wizards was a different way of approaching things.”

His contribution to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug soundtrack isn’t the only new song Ed Sheeran has written in recent days. The busy singer is also working on some tunes for a brand new album. According to Sheeran, fellow musician and best friend Taylor Swift completely approves of the guy’s latest musical endeavors.

“Whenever I finished a song, I’d send it to her to get her opinion. She’s heard all the songs and she’s a good judge of what’s good or not good,” he said.

Ed Sheeran’s tune “I See Fire” is currently available on the soundtrack for director Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The film is in theaters now.
