Four movies opened in theaters the last couple of days, and that means a huge shake-up at the weekend box office. Many thought that Johnny Depp would have taken the top spot with his new look in Black Mass , but it wasn’t meant to be. Sure, the movie did well, but it wasn’t enough to take the top spot from Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials .

As shown by Box Office Mojo , the estimated numbers for the domestic weekend box office had Scorch Trials end up with $30.3 million in an impressive opening. Black Mass came in second, but it wasn’t exactly right on the top spot’s heels as it pulled in $23.36 million.

M. Night Shyamalan’s horror movie The Visit had an impressive opening weekend, but dropped a whopping 55 percent this week. It came in third, but pulled in just $11.35 million to best The Perfect Guy in fourth place.

Two other new releases landed in the top 10 at the weekend box office, as well. Everest came in fifth with $7.56 million for its first few days. The true story thrilled Captive landed in the tenth spot with $1.4 million.

Full estimated numbers are below with exact numbers being released on Monday.

  1. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – $30.3 million
  2. Black Mass – $23.36 million
  3. The Visit – $11.35 million
  4. The Perfect Guy – $9.64 million
  5. Everest – $7.56 million
  6. War Room – $6.25 million
  7. A Walk in the Woods – $2.73 million
  8. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation – 2.25 million
  9. Straight Outta Compton – $1.97 million
  10. Captive – $1.4 million

Straight Outta Compton is continuing to bring in good numbers, and it is now approaching $160 million domestically. The fifth Mission Impossible in the franchise is approaching $200 million domestically, and it’s closing in on $700 million worldwide.

In some long-term news, Forbes did reveal that Marvel’s Ant-Man ended up topping $400 million, and that is yet more huge news for Disney. The worldwide gross is now $401.387 million, and that’s still a full month before it opens in China, and it just now opened in Japan.

Other than new films, the weekend box office wasn’t much of a hit for most of the movies that had already been in release. War Room continues to impress, with another $6.32 million to bring its cumulative total to $49.1 million.

Maze Runner 2 really tore things up at the weekend box office for its opening, and that was expected, but Black Mass isn’t overly far behind. Johnny Depp’s performance is getting rave reviews and word of mouth may help that film in its second week.
