An American language monitoring group has named Web 2.0 as the one millionth word or phrase in the English language.
The Global Language Monitor claims to track the English language through a formula that considers the frequency of words and phrases in print and electronic media. Web 2.0 got the prize after it appeared 25,000 times in searches and was widely accepted.
According to Reuters, other linguists are not surprisingly calling the finding a publicity stunt, saying it is impossible to count English words in use or to agree on how many times a word must be used before it is officially accepted.
As Adam Ostrow at Mashable also rightly points out , the award comes as the term Web 2.0 is starting to slip from regular use.
