A Las Vegas terror plot threatened to kidnap, torture, and kill Nevada cops.
The group calling itself the Sovereign Citizens is accused of orchestrating the Las Vegas terror plot.
Las Vegas police Lt. James Seebock says the Sovereign Citizens domestic terrorist groups have been responsible for shootings in Louisiana and Arkansas. There have been other violent confrontations between police and the Sovereign Citizens groups. Seebock says the Las Vegas terror plot would have have furthered “their ‘sovereign citizen’ ideology by committing criminal acts toward law enforcement.”
Undercover cops attended meetings for the Sovereign Citizens and befriended two of them. Police eventually arrested David Allen Brutsche and Devon Campbell Newman at an apartment a few miles off the Las Vegas Strip. The pair was planning on snatching police officers to “put them on trial” and then execute them in vacant houses. They had rigged up makeshift jails to house the police officers while they were being “interrogated.”
According to police, on July 9 Brutsche was recorded talking about planning the Las Vegas terror plot :
“We need to arrest the police and take them to our jail and put them in a cell and put them on trial in a people’s court. If we run into the position that they resist, then we need to kill them.”
The Sovereign Citizens movement believes they don’t believe they have to answer to government authority because they claim a conspiracy theory where the original United States government realized by the Founding Fathers was secretly replaced by corporations. Some of them believe the US government sets up “corporate shell accounts” and assigns the rights of the child to the corporate account-holders. They often take legal action to attempt to access the money in their shell accounts.
Such groups don’t have a centralized leadership but they do have shared beliefs. The FBI claims that members clog the justice system with frivolous lawsuits and try to set up their own legal system separate from the official government. Sovereign Citizens often use illegal weapons, which has lead to many violent confrontations and now the Las Vegas terror plot.
