Tracy Morgan has finally broken his silence in his first interview since the car crash that left him seriously injured and killed his friend James “Jimmy Mack” McNair.
While he has come a long way since the June 2014 crash, Morgan still has a long way to go and says he just wants to “get better” and “become healthy.”
“I think I’m at 75 percent,” Morgan, 46, told People Magazine . “I have my good days and I have my bad days… I just want to get better and become healthy.”
The Monday interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show marked his first , and very emotional interview, since last year.
“I can’t believe I’m here. I can’t believe I’m in front of you,” Morgan told Lauer. “I can’t believe I’m just here, and just seeing the tragedy that happened. It touches me.”
Tracy Morgan didn’t look much different than he has always looked, aside from the cane he was carrying. He claims he doesn’t remember the accident that took the life of his friend. Rather, he said the first thing he remembers is seeing the faces of his fiance and son.
“There are times where I have my good day and my bad days, where I forget things,” he said. “There are times where I get the headaches, and the nose bleeds. I won’t even let my lady know because I don’t want her to be worried about it.”
Morgan said he didn’t learn about McNair’s death until two weeks after the accident when he awoke from a coma and watched YouTube videos of the accident and McNair’s funeral.
“I had to know what happened to my friend. I had to know. I had to pay my respects, and that was my way,” he said.
“He was a close friend of mine, a comrade in comedy. He was a loving man, and he was a warm man,” he continued. “He was a good man. It’s just hard for me to see that he’s gone.”
Morgan said he hopes to return to the comedy scene and said he promises that he will make us laugh again someday. He said he does wonder, however, how he will ever be funny again.
“I wonder how I’m gonna be funny again,” Morgan said. “Remembering my identity, what do I do?”
“I love comedy. I’ll never stop loving her. I love comedy and I can’t wait to get back to her, but right now my goal is just to heal and get better because I’m not 100 percent yet, I’m not,” the 30 Rock star said. “And when I’m there, you’ll know it. I’ll get back to making you laugh. I promise you.”
