The jailed for NRA t-shirt student Jared Marcum is returning to class wearing the same NRA shirt he was arrested for in the first place.
As previously reported by The Inquisitr , middle schooler Jared Marcum was jailed over a NRA t-shirt dispute with one of the teachers at West Virginia’s Logan Middle School.
Jared Marcum’s stepfather, Allen Larieris, claims Jared was simply waiting in the school cafeteria line when a teacher ordered him to remove the NRA T-shirt or turn it inside out. Logan County Schools’ dress code prohibits clothing that displays alcohol, tobacco, drugs, profanity, violence, discriminatory messages, or sexually suggestive phrases.
Jared Marcum believes he expressing his support for the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms by wearing the NRA shirt, which apparently didn’t violate the school’s dress code, and refused to cooperate since the demand is said to be in violation of his free speech rights. Jared was sent to the school office where he once again refused to remove the NRA shirt and school officials called police.
Jared Marcum explains how his NRA shirt got him jailed:
“When the police came, I was still talking and telling them that this was wrong, that they cannot do this, it’s not against any school policy. The officer, he told me to sit down and be quiet. I said, `No, I’m exercising my right to free speech.’ I said it calmly.”
After being jailed for his NRA t-shirt , Jared Marcum faces charges of obstruction and disturbing the education process for arguing with teachers over the political statements on the student’s NRA t-shirt. But Jared Marcum has returned to school with his NRA t-shirt along with many others students wearing similar shirts showing support of the NRA and gun ownership.
Jared Marcum’s lawyer, Ben White, explains how Jared could be jailed for his NRA t-shirt and yet still return wearing the same shirt:
“[The school administrator’s] version is that the suspension was for disrupting the educational process, not the shirt. I don’t see how he materially disrupted the educational process. We at this point believe that Jared acted as mature as a 14-year-old child can act with the pressure that was put on him.”
