Super Mario Bros. 3 Map Crocheted Into Blanket By Game Fan: Guess How Long It Took?

You will never love Super Mario Bros. 3 as much as the guy who spent six years lovingly crocheting a map of it. You read that right: A man from Norway put together an exact duplicate of a Super Mario Bros. 3 world map. That is, the Super Mario All-Stars version.

Kjetil Nordin reportedly spent 800 hours total on the Nintendo -related project and went through hundreds of balls of yarn. What’s especially impressive about the work is that the coloring is quite faithful to the game’s original map. Kjetil Nordin took special care to only work with yarn of the same color as the Super Mario game screen. When interviewed by NRK , the Norwegian computer programmer and skydiving champion admitted that his project would have been done sooner. Unfortunately, a serious error on his part led to a slight delay.

“When the water was half way finished I saw that I had chosen the wrong shade of blue. It was almost purple and very ugly, so I had to undo all of it. That took an extra week.”

That is precisely the level of perfection that turns a geeky crocheting project to a six-year labor of love. Anyone else would have said, “Meh, close enough!” Thanks to Nordin’s keen eye, the gaming fan has gifted the world a unique piece of art.

Kjetil’s Super Mario Bros. 3 blanket went viral after one of his friends shared pictures of the finished project on Reddit.

Some Redditors had fun pointing out how long it would take to complete all of the maps in Super Mario Bros. 3 .

“Sweet, only 45.5 more years until he finishes all 8 worlds!”

Of course on a site like Reddit, it doesn’t take long for somebody to show up and rain on the dedicated crocheter’s parade.

I just know that somewhere on that blanket is a little mistake that annoys the hell out of the creator, but it looks perfect to everyone else.

With six years of work, mistakes, and corrections, it’s entirely possible that at least one error made through into the finished project. But really, who cares? Not many of us have the attention span to put that many years and that much yarn into ANY single project.

As for Kjetil Nordin, his Super Mario Bros. 3 blanket is an exercise in geekiness to which geeks everywhere heartily aspire.

I for one salute you, good sir.
