The New England Patriots may or may not be at Super Bowl 50. Tom Brady definitely will be.
Comcast SportsNet is reporting that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has formally asked Brady to participate in a ceremony honoring the past 43 Super Bowl Most Valuable Players. Super Bowl 50 will be played at the new Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
Brady and the other living MVP’s received a letter from Goodell regarding the honor. “The 2015 season culminates in Super Bowl 50,” the note reads. “To commemorate this milestone, we are launching a year-long celebration of the first 49 Super Bowls that will conclude with this year’s game in San Francisco next February. As part of this celebration, we will honor your important place in Super Bowl History.”
Brady would love to be a participant, more so if his Patriots could make it to Super Bowl 50 as contestants trying to repeat as Super Bowl Champions. The Patriots won Super Bowl 49, beating the NFC champion Seattle Seahawks 24-20 for the Patriots’ fourth Super Bowl title. Brady even tweeted his wishes after receiving the invitation. “What an honor… Hope I have my helmet on for the on-field ceremony in SF! ?#?teameffort? .”
Brady is being honored for being a three-time MVP in past Super Bowls. How ironic would it be if Brady is honored at Super Bowl 50 and is going after a fourth MVP award?
Boston is reporting that the ceremony will be part of the pre-game ceremonies for the Super Bowl 50 celebration.
Brady is currently tied with the Steeler’s Terry Bradshaw and the 49ers’ Joe Montana with the most Super Bowl rings, at four each. It would be intriguing for Brady to win his fifth in the new stadium in Santa Clara, which is about 30 minutes from Brady’s childhood home of San Mateo.
Brady has built a career on other’s doubt. Coming out of Michigan, Brady was infamously drafted in the sixth round by the Patriots. Brady got his big break when then-starter Drew Bledsoe was injured during a regular-season game. Brady took over the offense, and then proceeded to rewrite football history as the Patriots’ long-time starter.
Brady has always prided himself on his work ethic and mindset. Whenever he is asked which is his favorite Super Bowl title, he always responds with “The next one.” He is often compared to his childhood hero, Joe Montana, who offers this explanation about Brady: “I think it’s hard to put anybody up there(as the greatest quarterback to ever play the game), no matter who it might be. Go back and watch Otto Graham and Sammy Baugh. If you haven’t seen any footage, it’s ridiculous the things those guys did back then. I think it’s really hard to compare, but Tom obviously is having a tremendous career.”
