A passenger on a St. Lous MetroLink light rail train was viciously attacked after allegedly being asked what he thought about the Michael Brown “situation.”
A cellphone video of the assault was uploaded yesterday to a Facebook page and to YouTube today.
“Police said the victim, who is white, was punched and kicked by three black men, one of whom had made the reference to the teen killed in Ferguson by a police officer Aug. 9,” the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported .
On that date, Darren Wilson — a cop in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Mo. — fatally shot Michael Brown, 18, an incident that prompted a nationwide, racially charged controversy, including civil unrest in Ferguson and elsewhere. A St. Louis grand jury declined to indict Wilson on any charges, however, and the U.S. Department of Justice subsequently concluded that there were no federal civil rights violations by the officer in the encounter. “Brown’s death sparked outrage among many civil rights groups and activists who believed that he was targeted because he was black. The officer who shot Brown, Darren Wilson, is white,” The Daily Caller explained .
The victim of the Monday night train assault, 43, told police that one of the suspects initially asked to use his cellphone. “When he refused, the [suspect] asked what he thought about the Brown ‘situation,’ then punched and kicked him,” AP reported . An investigation by detectives in the incident is ongoing.
From what the victim apparently told police, the blows starting raining down on him after he allegedly told the men that “he hadn’t put much thought into it.” The man, who tried to cover up as he was being beaten, suffered cuts and bruises to his face in the barrage, but declined medical treatment.
A MetroLink security guard who witnessed the beating as the train pulled into the station called the cops. As he boarded the train car, the suspects fled and are still at large, although a surveillance camera may have captured their faces. Local police have requested the public’s cooperation in identifying the suspects in the passenger assault on the MetroLink train.
