Ryan Phillippe Disses His Own Movies: ‘In My Opinion, Five Of Them Are Good’

Ryan Phillippe disses his own movies in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times .

Ryan Phillippe has been able to build a fairly solid career on the big screen over the years, spanning from his film debut in the 1995 film Crimson Tide , starring Denzel Washington, to the 2014 limited release Reclaim , starring John Cusack.

Ryan is admittedly proud of several films from his resume – including the hit that intimately introduced him to Reese Witherspoon, Cruel Intentions .

However, according to what he said in the interview, the number of films that he is proud of is a lot lower than you might think.

“I’ve made 30-plus films over 20 years. And in my opinion, five of them are good.”

Ryan Phillippe then continued by explaining the life of being “an actor for hire” from his point of view – including the ups and downs of hard work .

“You slave away and you work hard and you want to make something great, and a lot of times you end up disappointed. There are a lot of elements that are beyond your control when you’re an actor for hire.”

In the interview, Ryan Phillippe named one film in particular that he thought was “terrible” – the 2011 Mike Gunther-directed film Setup , starring Bruce Willis and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.

“I did this terrible movie with 50 Cent. It was just a situation I didn’t want to be in. I was sold a bill of goods and it turned out to be something different, which is often the case in this business.”

It is because of this type of attitude that Ryan Phillippe has decided to shift his career goals away from being “an actor-for-hire” and more towards the controlling power and creative control of the director.

“Acting alone doesn’t sustain me the same way it used to. Which I think is completely okay if you’ve done something for 20 years. Trying something else becomes really appealing.”

Phillippe had the chance to enjoy the director’s chair as well as maintain the leading role as an actor in the film Catch Hell, which he also helped write.

There have been quite a few fans and critics alike that have posted their own opinions about Ryan Phillippe on Twitter since his interview with the Los Angeles Times was first published.

So #RyanPhillippe says he only made 5 good movies. To my own surprise, I count more than that. But I’m a sucker for #CruelIntentions …

Does Ryan Phillippe still have the same star power that he had 10-15 years ago?
