Robert Griffin III suffered an injury that could keep him out the rest of the season, one doctor has warned.

The Washington Redskins quarterback landed awkwardly at the end of a play in Sunday’s game against Jacksonville and had to be carted off the field .

Griffin said he knew instantly that the injury was very serious .

“It’s an excruciating pain, but I think any time you look at your ankle and it’s in a different direction, you’re probably not going to try to get up,” he said after the game. “I was just trying to make sure I wasn’t doing any more damage to it, so I stayed there and waited for the trainers to come and help me get up and on the cart to get the X-rays.”

Robert Griffin III may now miss the entire season due to the severity of the injury, ESPN’s chief doctor claimed.

RGIII has dislocated left ankle. These generally occur with fracture so I think he is done for year.

The Washington Redskins are trying to be optimistic, Pro Football Talk reported, hoping that Robert Griffin III can recover from the injury in just about a month.

Mike Florio writes notes:

“Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III dislocated his ankle on Sunday against the Jaguars. On Monday, more will be known about how much time he’ll miss. Per a league source, an MRI will be conducted tomorrow. The current hope is that Griffin will miss only four or five weeks.”

But if the one-year timeline is correct, it could mean Griffin has played his last game with the Washington Redskins. Though the team invested a bevy of draft picks to move up and take him, his injury troubles, combined with the stellar play of backup Kirk Cousins, may mean Griffin has lost his place as starter — and his place with the team.

Official word on the Robert Griffin III injury is expected later on Monday.
