More news is out on the tragic killing of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner by their son, Nick Reiner.
According to the death certificate for the couple, the Reiners died minutes after the attack, so at least they didn’t suffer for long. Meanwhile, two of their children are planning a memorial service for their parents, as more details come out about their cause of death earlier this month. The couple was discovered in the afternoon of Sunday, December 14, in their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has released the death certificates for the couple, as reported by TMZ. The certificates state that Rob Reiner’s body was found at 15:45, and Michele Reiner’s body was discovered at 15:46. In both cases, the cause of death is revealed as “multiple sharp force injuries,” while the circumstances are described as “homicide” and “with knife, by another.”
Meanwhile, the time between the start of the stabbing attack and death is given as “minutes,” while the time and date of death is recorded as “unknown.” Moreover, the “type of disposition” is listed on the certificate records as “cremate/residence,” with no confirmation as to whether creation was yet carried out.
The New York Times first released the news of the Reiners’ death on December 14, when they reported that the Reiners’ daughter, Romy Reiner, had discovered her father’s body at the family home in Brentwood. This prompted her nearby roommate to call 911, and authorities then discovered Michele Singer Reiner’s body on arrival at the house.
Hours later, Nick Reiner was arrested in the Exposition Park area of Los Angeles relating to the deaths of his parents. He was formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder with the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, on December 16. Moreover, he faces an additional special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife. If convicted, he faces life in state prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty.
Since then, multiple outlets have reported that Nick Reiner was recently being treated for schizophrenia. People reported that he was placed on suicide watch and is being held in solitary confinement while wearing a suicide prevention smock at all times.
Two of the Reiners’ children, Jake and Romy Reiner have released a new statement on Tuesday, revealing that a memorial service is being planned. “Jake and Romy Reiner remain grateful for the outpouring of love and support they have received. They will share information about a memorial service honoring their parents at a later date,” the statement read.
In a statement to People, Romy and Jake spoke of mourning their parents on December 17, writing, “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” adding, “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents, they were our best friends.”
RIP Rob and Michele Singer Reiner and sincere condolences to Romy and Jake Reiner.
