Pumpkins filled with cocaine sure would make for an interesting Halloween trick or treat. That’s exactly what Montreal-area woman Mercedes Jerez Farias , 26, was carrying on Halloween. She now faces two drug-related charges after border officials discovered the three heavier than normal pumpkins in her bags.
The officers ran them through an x-ray machine and noticed some interesting masses in the pumpkins. They removed just over 4 pounds of cocaine from the 3 pumpkins. Farias appeared before a judge in Montreal on Thursday and was charged with importing drugs and drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.
As of Friday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have taken over the investigation. If found guilty, Jerez Farias faces a minimum of two years in prison. Not much information is being released about the suspect yet, including whether she is a Canadian citizen or not.
Drug smuggling is not completely uncommon through Canada. Back in September, a woman used her pregnancy belly to smuggle cocaine . Since the beginning of 2013, border services officers at Montréal-Trudeau Airport have made 173 drug seizures, including 10 cocaine seizures for a total of 44 kilograms. That would make this seizure account for almost 5 percent of all drug busts at the airport.
Now we know that smuggling cocaine with pumpkins isn’t a good idea. Of course, there’s always turkeys for drug smuggling.
