The remake of the 90s action movie Point Break is reportedly moving forward.

Although the project was originally announced back in 2011, very little information has been released to the public. However, it would seem that there’s still some life in the proposed remake of director Kathryn Bigelow’s crime-thriller.

Instead of dealing with surfers who stage an elaborate bank robberies, the film will focus on a group of athletes who are into extreme sports . In keeping with Bigelow’s original movie, the story will focus on an agent who attempts to infiltrate the group.

The folks at Alcon Entertainment will produce the Point Break remake. The movie should begin production at some point towards the end of 2013. Warner Bros. is expected to handle theatrical distribution for the film.

In addition to Alcon’s Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, the remake will make its way to the big screen with a little help from Michael De Luca, John Baldecchi, Chris Taylor, and Equilibrium director Kurt Wimmer.

The original Point Break was released into theaters across the US on July 21, 1991. Produced by James Cameron and starring Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, and Gary Busey, the film would go on to make around $43 million at the box office . The flick’s worldwide box office total stands at $83 million.

Given that the movie has a very strong and loyal fanbase, the folks at Alcon Entertainment may have their work cut out for them. However, the movie could prove to be quite popular if the filmmakers handle the extreme sports element in the right way.

Ericson Core got his start by handling cinematography on such films as the original Fast and the Furious and the ill-fated adaptation of Daredevil . Core made his directorial debut with the football drama Invincible starring Mark Wahlberg .

What do you think about the proposed Point Break remake? Are you a fan of the original movie?
