Nintendo is telling Wii owners to buy a Wii U, saying it’s not just an upgrade.
With the flagging sales of Nintendo’s latest console, the videogame pioneer that brought the game industry out of the big crash of the 80s is resorting to a new kind of advertising. They apparently feel that customers who already own a Wii are just holding back and don’t want to upgrade. Nintendo is attempting to convince them that the Wii U is not just an upgrade.
Nintendo is sending this message to Wii owners, “It’s time to discover Wii U. Wii U is the all new home console from Nintendo. It’s not just an upgrade – it’s an entirely new system that will change the way you and your family experience games and entertainment.”
The videogame company has clearly been desperate to ring in the sales, after a drought of quality games on the Wii U and the subsequent failure to reach target sales. Titles like Dead or Alive 5 Plus and Need for Speed: Most Wanted U are almost all the Wii U currently has, with Game & Wario and Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate on the way, but gamers want more of a selection.
Wii U needs new and improved Mario and Zelda , and it needs them now.
The poor presentation at the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo made Wii U look less than impressive, and while Nintendo fans may not be craving the powerhouse systems that Microsoft and Sony have in their future, they obviously aren’t that interested in the Wii U.
Nintendo fans were happy with the 3DS and the Wii in spite of bigger consoles from competitors, so the system capabilities are not the problem. It’s the perception, as Nintendo has come to realize.
It is yet unclear what the future holds for Nintendo, but if something doesn’t change dramatically soon, the Wii U may be their last hurrah.
