Nine Inch Nails Drummer Furious Over Carly Rae Jepsen Mashup [Video]

When a Nine Inch Nails song was mashed-up with Carly Rae Jepsen’s obnoxious hit “Call Me Maybe,” it thrilled the Internet in that “it’s so bad it’s good” kind of way. But there is one dissenter among them, a man who finds the combination of pop grist and true art truly deplorable: Former Nine Inch Nails drummer Chris Vrenna.

The mashup combines the music from Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” with the singing and lyrics of the Nine Inch Nails hit “Head Like A Hole,” into the ridiculous yet surprisingly catchy “Call Me A Hole.”

The original track has gotten over one million listens, and various YouTube videos using the song have racked up hundreds of thousands more.

With all that attention, you wonder whether the song will get to Jepsen’s camp or reps for Nine Inch Nails first. It has at least caught the attention of former NIN drummer Chris Vrenna, who, as the first to speak out on the mashup, finds it “silly,” and “insulting.”

Vrenna told TMZ that he “find[s] the whole thing silly and partly offensive. … I find it kind of insulting,” adding that the mashup “has trivialized something we’ve done. I am proud of what we’ve done and to take art — just to be a joke — I don’t have any respect for it.”

Vrenna did make it clear that he holds no negative animus toward Carly Rae Jepsen or her music . Instead, he thinks that the third party who put the two songs together should be blamed, and says that music created by NIN shouldn’t be “messed with.”

“In 48 hours no one will even know it existed,” he concluded.

In case you missed “Call Me A Hole,” the NIN/Carly Rae Jepsen mashup, we have included a video version of it below. Let us know what you think: Is Chris Vrenna overreacting, or should NIN music be more respected and not subjected to this kind of alteration?
